Call a Professional to Avoid Total Collapse of Your Home!

It can be found in any good joke poetry collection, the one about the single termite who ate the wood, “tasted it and found it good, and that is why your cousin May fell through the parlor floor today.” Most people realize, however, that an infestation of such creatures is no laughing matter, because it is a threat to a homeowner’s property, not to mention the beauty of its woodwork. That is why termite control is a serious business, and one that infestation experts put a lot of effort, efficiency and man hours into. The number one priority for a pest control company is to eliminate unwanted critters from your home as quickly as possible.

The first thing for the homeowner to realize is that he cannot do this on his own; he must be able to identify the crucial areas of his property where termites might hide, many of which are not easy to reach. He will need special equipment to drill or pry his way in, and the chemicals can be toxic if he does not know how to mix and apply them properly. Do-it-yourselfers take note, this is one time to leave it to the professionals.

How do the professionals control critters like this anyway? Well, there are two ways to do it.

Once hired, a pro will most likely choose one of these methods: a baiting mixture or a liquid chemical spray. Liquid sprays, called termiticides, have been around for quite a while, and are usually soaked into the soil around the base of the house to make contact with the colony. There are also two kinds of chemical spray, the repellent which drives them away and the toxin which kills them. The latter is definitely the preferred method, since homeowners probably want them dead, not just moved somewhere else.

The other kind of treatment the professional may use is termite bait. This is usually a food that termites like-paper, cardboard or soft wood treated with a lethal and slow-acting chemical. They operate in the same way as the famous “roach motel,” except here it is a sort of termite restaurant, where the creatures sit down to dinner but they do not get up from the table again. This kind of bait, like the spray, is applied underground. The individual baits are buried in spots of likely infestation around the homeowner’s property. The bolder members among the termite population will spy the baits, eat them and take the poison down to their colony to share, not realizing that they themselves are now spies murdering their own kind. Sort of fitting, isn’t it?

The main thing to realize about these infestations is that they are probably fairly extensive; most professionals, for example, will not warranty a spot control, but must be able to treat an entire house and its surrounding area. The good news is that, once that is done, the treatment will last five years, and most treatments, even for entire houses, are relatively inexpensive. Hopefully, termites will no longer be a joke to anyone.
