Companies Are Going Green in the US
For companies, going green does not always mean loosing money to follow some liberal legislation. While many people would like to see all companies make choices based on what is best for the environment the reality is they usually make decisions based on what is good for the profits. The only thing that occasionally causes a company to make the right choice instead of the profitable one is if public opinion pressures them. The move to go green and become a more eco conscious country has put pressure on large corporations to make decisions that are more environmentally friendly. Along the way some of them have found that it can actually save you money and in some cases, make you money if you “Go Green”.
Anytime a new industrial idea has presented its self companies in the United States have been quick to accommodate new ideas. The technology explosion in the past few decades has caused an extreme burden on landfills. The number of cell phones, computers, and other technology discarded to make room for the next big thing is overwhelming. While the United States was a little behind Europe on this one, many US technology companies have started “take back programs”. Dell, a large maker of PCs has started accepting old computers and recycling them free of charge.
GE or General Electric prides themselves on being leaders in the green movement. As one of the largest corporations in America, when they decided to go green they went full speed ahead. The company developed a new locomotive engine that runs on diesel fuel. The new engine consumes less fuel and also puts out forty percent fewer emissions than previous engines. GE was not satisfied though and they are making plans to release an updated locomotive that utilizes the same technology as the Toyota Prius. The locomotive will store energy produced when it breaks.
Wal-Mart has come under fire in the past for a few less than eco friendly business practices but they are really cleaning up their act. Wal-Mart utilizes a fleet of eighteen wheelers to transport its goods that is nearly the largest fleet in the country. In an attempt to decrease the carbon emissions produced during the countless road hours required to keep the company operating, Wal-Mart is investing in a new technology research program. Wal-Mart has given money to a number of the most well known developers of large truck technology in order to help them fund research to develop a hybrid truck that can be used instead of the current trucks. When the new technology is finally ready, not only will Wal- Mart have helped to make the air cleaner, they will be saving money on gas!
Investing in future technologies may cost money initially but the companies who invest in innovation not the ones who resist it, have always been the ones whose businesses last through the ever changing market. No one can debate the long term benefit of “going green”.
