Different Approaches Used by a Wedding Photographer

Photography is a vital aspect of any marriage ceremony. Most couples will want a record of their wedding day to keep for the rest of their lives. There are a variety of different approaches to a marriage that a wedding photographer may make.

The traditional approach uses a directorial mode. This is where a photographer gets all individuals at the wedding for pose in different photographs. For example the bride and groom cutting the cake, or groups shots of families and so on.

Another approach is more photo-journalistic, the idea is to document the day and capture key events more candidly. Conceptual photography involves creating a documentary of the entire day from start to finish, and tell a story. This involves excellent skills with composition and a good understanding of lighting, so that images are visually very strong. This style of wedding photography is becoming very popular as it is more realistic and can create fun photographs. Black and white photography is often a popular choice in contemporary photography, to create artistic looking images.

A form of wedding photography popular in Asia combines wedding photography with fashion photography. This may be done in a studio or on location somewhere. The images are usually stylized and glamorous, much like fashion photographs. This may involve the creative use of post processing to create exiting images. Sometimes hairstylists and make-up artists maybe hired, and the fashion style approach may be used at the actually ceremony.

Photographers will often combine these different kinds of photography at a wedding. So they document the day and also take the normal traditional group photographs as well. Many will carry more than one camera with them. Some photographers will take lighting rigs with them in order to use creative lighting. These are usually in the form of flash units, although warm lights and location lighting may be used sometimes to get a particular result.

Although digital is the medium of choice amongst the majority of wedding photographers, film is still very popular. Some photographers believe that film has more accurate color and greater tonality and dynamic range. Negative color film gives a nice pastel affect that can create romantic looking results. Black and white film is also considered to be better than digital black and white. Photographers often scan the negatives to produce digital files, but many still use an analogue printing process in a darkroom.

Proofs of the images are usually shown to the couple, who are then able to select their favorite images to be printed. The prints can be mounted in an album or printed in a book. Fine art prints are also an option, which can then be framed. Also digital files are given to the couple so they can distribute them to friends and family on the internet. A CD or DVD of photographs is another option, so they can be viewed as a slide-show on a television.

There are many styles of photography that can be used. Whether photo-journalistic, traditional, fashion orientated or contemporary, wedding photographers are available to capture the moments in a couples most important day. There are many photographers online who will be able to give further information.
