Doctors Must Keep Up With Continuing Medical Education
Doctors are the key link between you and your health, an integral ingredient in the continued well-being of our civilization. When you get right down to it, our doctors are the only thing standing between us and the end of the world as we know it. No, that\’s not as melodramatic as it might sound. Bacteria, viruses, parasites and fungi outnumber us a few billion to one. They\’re everywhere. They\’re more adaptable. They\’re more ruthless. They don\’t understand that tipping the balance of nature isn\’t going to end the way they want it to.
They do all this to humanity way before chronic diseases like diabetes and the deterioration of age step in. Our doctors are our knights in shining armor, the first line of defense between us and the bad particles abounding on this earth – unseen particles of doom lurk everywhere and we can\’t fight them. New health nemesis are popping up everywhere in the world on a daily basis. That being the case, it is of the essence that our doctors be informed, armed and ready to do battle. The means to this crucial strategic plan is continuing medical education.
What is Continuing Medical Education?
If you\’re in the medical field you\’re already intimately acquainted with the challenges and the necessity of continuing medical education. If you\’re not familiar with continuing medical education, let me ask you this. How long has your doctor been practicing medicine?
When on the hunt for a doctor for yourself, you are more likely to choose one who has some years of real medical practice behind him rather than the one who graduated medical school yesterday. The veterans in the field of medicine have forgotten more than the new graduate will learn in the next two decades.
The medical field is a rapidly changing one. There are new drugs on the market and new technologies appearing that enable doctors to treat conditions only dreamed of forty years ago. There are new conditions being diagnosed at a dizzying rate. A doctor who obtained a degree from medical school 20, 30 or 40 years ago would not know any of this and that lack of knowledge could lead to serious even fatal treatment decisions.
What Continuing Medical Education Will Do
When you\’re a doctor, you never stop learning. You can\’t afford to. Every new discovery that comes out of research labs and remote villages around the world could be the key to longer life, and a better quality of life, for the men, women and children who come into your office every day. Ideally, you\’d have time to regularly read medical journals, attend conferences and symposiums and stay abreast of changes in the field on your own.
The world is not perfect and it is a world where most doctors regularly work ten to twelve hour days. A world where meals are skipped, their kid\’s soccer games go by without them and sound sleep is rare. No matter what conference they would like to attend, it goes slipping away without them.
This is the reason the AMA mandates their physicians complete a certain number of continuing medical education units every year to keep their licenses. This is their way of ensuring you that your doctors have what they need to give you and your family the treatment options you need to maintain a healthy life. It also provides doctors the necessary peace of mind to soundly sleep those six or so hours of sleep a night knowing they have the weapons at hand to keep the battle going their way.
