Does Exercise Improve Overall Wellbeing?
The benefits of physical exercise are so noticeable it is surprising there are still so many individuals who are unaware of what they are missing. More often than not, they have heard about the effort and some discomfort at the start of becoming fit. One of the biggest obstacles for a lot of unfit and overweight people is their lifestyle that is geared towards inactivity. Too much time is spent sitting on the couch watching TV and surfing the net.
Many individuals have never been fit without carrying too much weight. They don\’t know how it feels to be fit and healthy. All they know is the feeling of being heavy, sluggish, constipated and short of breath.
There is no doubt that by improving and maintaining fitness levels you improve your lifestyle. However, to become fit takes work and effort – you have to say goodbye to inactivity because it could be the death of you.
To keep up your level of fitness you have to exercise on a regular basis. When you exercise you burn up calories and this means you will lose excess weight. The harder you work, the more energy is needed and the more calories are burned. Even if you go for a walk or use the stairs instead of the elevator you burn up calories. Therefore, burning calories on a regular basis not only helps you lose weight but it controls your weight.
Fitness is the natural means of lowering the risk of hypertension (high blood pressure) and heart disease. Whether you are overweight or not, exercise increases HDL (high density lipoprotein also known as ‘healthy\’ cholesterol). When this occurs, there is an even blood flow which helps keep the heart healthy. Other serious diseases like arthritis, stroke, depression, metabolic syndrome, cancer and type II diabetes have a much lower chance of developing due to regular physical exercise.
An almost immediate benefit of exercise is mood change. Being unfit and overweight affects your mood. Everybody who has experienced a physical workout will confirm they feel happier and brighter. Even a brisk thirty minute improves your mood. Exercise releases natural mood enhancing chemicals in the brain. A good mood leads to self-confidence and better control of your life.
If you are unfit then you won\’t have any stamina. Simple tasks like doing groceries shopping or visiting your child\’s school will be an effort because you won\’t have enough energy. When you exercise your lungs and brain are flooded with oxygen and this leads to energy. Regular exercise means a constant state of fitness and a constant state of energy to more than cope with daily activities.
Of course, if you are expending energy due to activities you need a good night\’s sleep. If you exercise regularly you will sleep through the night and wake up feeling full of energy and vigor for life. All it takes to improve your overall wellbeing is three exercise sessions a week made up of weight training and aerobics to improve your everyday life.
