Everyone has a hero today, most who do are children, but adults belong in that group too. The hero is generally someone so famous he is known all over the world, or may be a family member of close friend. It is a normal practice to respect someone and wish to emulate that person.

Having a hero to look up to is a trait that children often pick up from their parents. Often this is a good and healthy behavior. Having someone to look up to helps us to work on improving ourselves and know that if someone else can do it, then we can too.

In modern times, the person we aspire to be like is usually a celebrity. This comes as no surprise as they have everything we want. They have the bank account, the yacht, the house in Malibu and someone to clean up after them and cook their food. This sort of life certainly sounds all good to me.

The tabloids and popular magazines wouldn\’t be so sought after if they didn\’t print pictures and stories of the most “in” celebrities of the day. These famous people fascinate us and make us envious of all they have. They can go anywhere they want and do anything they want, who among us hoi polloi can say that? We also love the drama of their lives and especially the hot items that make for good gossip,

With celebrities plastered all over our TVs and magazines it is becoming rare these days for Americans to have a role model or hero to aspire to that they have actually met.

It is really interesting that so many people look up to someone they have never met and have no hopes of doing so. The children being treated for cancer at St. Jude Children\’s Hospital or people receiving treatment at Cancer Treatment Centers of America choose as their role models the scientists and researchers searching for a cure for cancer.

Every day thousands of people are diagnosed with cancer, some of them children. For those of us who have never been victim to cancer, we cannot possibly know how devastating that diagnoses must be. We don\’t have to be going through it however, to know that it is often incredibly painful and that we ourselves hope never to get it. Fortunately however, scientists have been working diligently for many years to find a cure for cancer.

Just fifty years ago, a diagnosis of cancer was a death sentence. There was so little known about the disease and its many variations. Today, because of the diligence and dedication of scientists and physicians all over the globe, people suffering from cancer have a means to fight the disease.

These hard working researchers have given the lives back to millions of cancer sufferers. For them, these professionals are their heroes. So next time you discuss the subject of heroes with your children or think about choosing a hero for yourself, you just might look at giving the nod to these dedicated professional scientists who have made such a difference in so many millions of lives.
