Edwin Jeans Fall/Winter 2011
Founded by Tsunemi Takeo in 1947 (just 2 years after the end of World War II), Edwin Jeans was still lacking the most important fabric that would later become the company’s signature trademark – denim.
Unfortunately, for Tsunemi Takeo, Japan was in utter ruin and it would take a while for his vision to come to fruition; provide a high-quality denim product to the fashion market. Amazingly, it did not take long for Japan’s economy to find new life.
The scarcity of denim was extremely problematic and the only obtainable merchandise was the poor-quality leftovers brought into the country by the United States. Tsunemi Takeo had no alternative but to thoroughly wash and restore the denim to a state that could be used and sold. This usually meant hand-laundering and mending pieces that were commercially viable.
By 1951, denim was finally being produced domestically by farm owners. Because of its rarity, the denim was expensive. It was also of poorer quality than that being produced by countries in the western world. Determined to produce a denim product he could be proud of, Tsunemi Takeo organized all of his own raw cotton materials.
By 1961, Tsunemi Takeo crafted his very first pair of Edwin jeans (DENIM rearranged with the M inverted to a W). What was once a dream had finally become a reality; ensuring customers were receiving the workmanship and quality many people longed for.
These were (and continue to be) the standards by which the Edwin brand continue to live up to, embracing their work and surpassing previous endeavors with each new piece of clothing designed.
By 1963, Edwin was producing the world’s heaviest ring spun denim jeans, featuring the famous tri-color rainbow selvedge which is still in use today.
In the 1970’s, Edwin developed “old wash” denim jeans. These jeans were rigid and durable and popular work attire.
In the 1980’s, Edwin developed “stone washing” which completely revolutionized the denim industry.
In the 1990’s, Edwin created the “new vintage” denim design. This design incorporates the art of hand-replicating vintage washes from pre-1947 sources.
