Fleet Management is a Blossoming Business
Fleet management is the management of a company\’s fleet of vehicles. This includes trucks, cars, vans and ships. The management of the fleet of vehicles includes maintenance, drivers, speed, health and safety, fuel, tracking and financing. The management team is either outsourced or in-house.
The company also tracks the amortization of the vehicles. It is important to be able to predict the useful lifecycle of a vehicle. A guide is available that is produced every year by Mercury Associates. If an aging vehicle is kept too long the cost in upkeep will be higher than the worth of the vehicle. There is an optimum time when the vehicle should be replaced and this can be calculated by consulting information that is annually updated.
Tracking the vehicles is one of the first concerns. GPS is usually employed but cellular triangulation can also be used. GPS is the better option if the vehicles are to be in remote areas of the world. Using satellites to track vehicle location in real time is ideal for keeping regular, frequent updates.
Cellular triangulation provides a radio based network where radio coverage between different land areas are connected. The land areas are called cells and each one has a transceiver. The advantage to this system is that it covers a larger area than any other system.
The vehicles have computers onboard that record data concerning how the driver drives the vehicle. It will note when and where they stop, where they have gone and any other activity they are programmed to record about the driver. It will also gather data about fuel consumption and other mechanical diagnostics.
When ships are at sea the fleet management company keeps track on their location. The company will also manage the daily operations of the ship such as crew, maintenance and the day to day operation of the ship. This time consuming process frees up the ship\’s owner to pursue the booking of cargo on their ship.
The fleet managers are also able to remotely disable a vehicle if need be. The dispatcher can slow down a truck, bleed air from the brakes or downshift the vehicle if need be. This prewarns the driver that their truck is about to be disabled. The driver in turn can send out an emergency signal by pressing a panic button in the vehicle or in a key-fob. A dispatcher can communicate with the driver to assess the situation. If need be the truck can be disabled.
There are certain areas of the world that are dangerous for transport vehicles to go. Trucks can be forced to stop by armed highwaymen intent on forcibly extracting money or the contents of the truck from the driver. The roads are often located in very isolated locations where help would be difficult to find when needed. The fleet management company would at least know where the truck was located.
Fleet management has become more manageable with satellite tracking and computer software programs. As new economies expand and develop globally so will these companies. In Europe alone the number is somewhere between 1.5 and 4 million units.
