Four Habits to Reduce Heart Attack Risk

Today, while I was driving back from having a double latte and a coconut macaroon at my local cafe, I heard a report on four simple things people could do to reduce their risk of heart attack by eighty-some percent.

That number took me off guard. I think the report said the behaviors had to be implemented for a few decades and then heart attack risk could be reduced by something like eighty-seven percent. Astonishing.

The radio report also said that even adopting these behaviors for four years reduces someone’s heart attack risk by forty-some percent. That’s amazing.

Well, I decided to make these behaviors a part of my life. The first change I am going to implement is going to be skipping the double latte and macaroon next time and instead, having a big glass of Nopalea Juice. This juice, made from the prickly pear cactus is going to help me with one of the steps needed to reduce my risk, as you see below. The reason it is going to help with the steps, is that it can count as a serving of fruit for me, but the other reason is not on this list. The other reason is that because the prickly pear cactus is a natural antioxidant and natural anti-inflammatory, it will even improve my chances of lowering my risk. This is partly because chronic inflammation is now strongly tied to your risk of heart attack.

So, let’s look at what the doctors say will reduce your risk of heart attack:

1. Stop Smoking (if you smoke). Easy enough. I haven’t smoked for ten years.

2. Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Not so easy. I have known about this recommendation my entire life and yet have a tough time mastering it. I even know that serving sizes are much smaller than we think, and still it is tough to get that much into my diet. This is where I’m hoping drinking Nopalea Juice will help on at least one level.

3. Exercise vigorously for at least three and a half hours each week. When the announcer on the radio said the first part of that sentence, I balked. I thought he was going to say two and a half hours daily, and I thought, “No, way!” But then when I heard we were supposed to do that weekly, I knew I could do it!

4. Avoid becoming overweight or lose weight if you are. They key is to keep your BMI, which stands for body mass index below 30. Now, that I’m writing this, I realize that Nopalea Juice could also help with this step. It is good way to get a sweet treat and something yummy to drink instead of binging on sodas or sugar. In fact, just replacing soda pop with Nopalea Juice would probably automatically result in some type of weight loss.

So, in essence, four steps can reduce your heart attack risk by eighty percent. In my opinion, the first step, quitting smoking won’t be easy, but will pay off the biggest in health benefits.
