Camouflage, for most of its existence has always been a very serious matter. The entity being camouflaged depended on it for its welfare, if not its very life. Camouflage is still very serious for all of its users except human beings. For humans, it has been serious up until the past few years. Today, one can\’t walk down a city street without seeing several people in camouflage clothing of some sort. They even make women\’s underwear in camouflage patterns. It seems the aim is not to conceal, but to be certain one is seen.

I suppose it\’s the same mentality that puts people on the interstate highways in off road vehicles. The civilian counterpart to the ultimate off road vehicle, the Hummer, is only seen on paved roads. If this trend continues, will we start seeing people in church wearing ghillie suits? I can see the ladies now in their ghillie blouse and skirt with the ghillie material designed to allow the occasional glimpse of parts that are not supposed to be \”glimpsable\”. Come to think of it, as the GIs were coming home after WWII, many of them brought back grass skirts from the islands in the Pacific. Those did much the same as a ghillie skirt would. That\’s the lighter side of camouflage.

We actually have better and more varied camouflage today than at any time in our past. Each of the military branches has their own particular camouflage and usually in more than one pattern. Civilian hunters and other outdoorsmen can buy a military set of camouflage clothes in at least six different patterns. Whichever part of this land you have activities in, there is a camo pattern to suit your needs. For those who really want the ultimate in camouflage, these camouflage clothes can be bought in the form of a ghillie suit in a variety of patterns and can even be bought in a customized version.

For those with more time than money on their hands, you can build your ghillie suit from any stage. Sort of like those houses you can get where construction can be stopped at any point so that you can finish it according to your personal tastes and abilities. Some people who have both the money and time might enjoy building their own. With attention to detail and a good imagination, you can build as good or better a ghillie suit than the ready made ones.

A lot of paintballers use ghillie suits, and those that do and learn how to use it are extremely effective. Wildlife photographers stand to benefit more than most from their camouflage and a ghillie suit is the ultimate.

Camouflage and especially ghillie suits are not for everyone. Can you imagine going quail hunting in a ghillie suit? Your dog would chew your leg off. It\’s necessary to keep things in perspective about the use of camouflage. It can be argued that a ghillie suit takes the sport out of hunting and it very well could if the wearer knows his stuff. There are those who have refined the stalk to the point that they could almost place the gun against the body of his prey. Take it as seriously as you prefer. Decide how sporting you want to be. Walk naked into the woods and wrestle a bear to the ground or get fully kitted out with a Hi-powered rifle and a BDU ghillie suit with face paint and all. It\’s your choice.
