It used to be that Honduras coffee was not necessarily that popular in the specialty coffee market. However, that seems to be quickly changing. The thing is that Honduras has all of the environmental factors that come together to make great coffee. Even its neighboring countries such as Nicaragua and Guatemala have become known for producing excellent quality coffee. The thing that Honduras lacks is a good system for processing and transportation, along with the necessary capital to create a name for itself in the specialty coffee market.
For awhile now, this type of coffee has been sold primarily in the commercial market. What this means is that even the highest quality beans have not been sold at a high price. This results in a lack of funds for the farmers and exporters to maximize the potential of this type of coffee. This means that the coffee ends up being a mild blender rather than a single origin coffee.
However, lately there has been a lot of help coming in from coops and various organizations. Investments have been made in new equipment, and the previous cost-cutting procedures are being eliminated. It hasn’t been easy for the farmers, but significant improvements have now been made. As a matter of fact, high quality specialty coffees are now being produced, and the retail price still remains fairly low.
Lately there have been some amazing Honduras coffee blends coming out on the specialty market. These blends tend to be even sweeter than usual, and they have a lower acidity. This makes them an excellent choice for a component in Espresso blends. These newer blends come with a distinct sweet caramel flavor, and they are typically going to be lower in acidity than other Central American blends.
Farmers in Honduras are currently working on obtaining various certifications so that their crops may be more heavily commercialized. As a matter of fact, the Western area of Honduras tends to heavily rely on the production of coffee for its economy.
There are a lot of families from the rural areas that are farming coffee in order to make a living. Due to the improved techniques and infrastructure, these families are now able to enjoy more of a substantial income.
There has also been a significant reduction in shipping delays due to the new storage warehouses that have been built. Now there are new records being set regarding the export of coffee from Honduras.
The average Honduran blend of coffee will have a scent that resembles peanuts and cocoa. Even though it tastes fairly mild, it tends to be a very crisp blend of chocolate and nutty flavor.
Hondurans themselves absolutely adore coffee. They prefer to take in a good cup of coffee with every meal, and sometimes even between meals as well. In most cases, Hondurans will like their coffee to be very sweet. They also like their coffee with plenty of milk.
