Glass water pipes are at times also commonly referred to as a hookah or a bong. They are devices that are usually used to smoke substances such as tobacco, cannabis and in some occasions other herbs. The devices work by bubbling smoke through a chamber that is filled with water. This enables the smoker to smoke in a manner quite different from how he would have smoked it through a conventional pipe.

This device is designed in this manner so as to either cool the smoke before it reaches the inhalers lungs or build up buffer of smoke for quicker inhalation of the smoke or both. The term bong was coined from the Thai word baung meaning a section of bamboo that has been cut off.

Bongs vary greatly in shape, color and size. They are however not limited to glass and can be constructed from a diverse range of materials. Some have even been constructed from fruits. These items are often heavily decorated according to the owners taste and become a signature of that individual pipe owner.

The pipe consists of the following components for it to work, a bowl, mouthpiece, chamber, base and stem. The mouthpiece is where the user places the mouth to inhale the smoke. The chamber is the area where the smoke gathers for it to be inhaled. The base is the area containing the water and is usually flat so that the pipe does not tip over. The stem goes into the base and it is the device that holds the bowl which holds the tobacco as it burns.

This device is used in the following manner. When the user inhales the mouth has to seal the mouth piece. This in turn reduces pressure in the chamber of the pipe. This then pulls the smoke through the stem and into the base through the water creating bubbles. The smoke then goes into the chamber and is inhaled by the smoker.

There is a characteristic noise made by the device while in use which is similar to that made when one blows air through a straw into a glass of juice. Some pipes have a small hole on the side of the chamber known as a carburetor. This is usually covered to allow the smoke to fill up in the chamber so that when released, air rushes in through it and the smoke in the chamber is inhaled much quicker than when being smoked through the stem.

The bubbling of the smoke through the water serves to cool the smoke for a less harsh experience. There are some individuals who believe that smoking through the bong is a much healthier way to smoke than the more conventional methods. There are some studies that support this theory and others indicate that it makes little difference.

The water used in this apparatus is a particularly disgusting and foul liquid once it has been used. After several uses, the water has the ability to stain clothing and fabric and it will make them smell awful. The water usually turns slightly green after use and it gets darker after every use.
