Interesting Ideas to Add to Your Ezine Newsletter
Here are eight interesting ideas to add to your eZine newsletter. Please note that by interesting I do not mean interesting to you, or your board, or your staff, but to your readers and members. Of course, what interests your members or customers should be of interest to your organization-if not, something is seriously out of synch!
Idea #1: Upcoming events, preferably set off in a separate frame, and with registration access for events close in time. Are you having a contest? A golf tournament? Activities are always of interest to readers already committed as clients or members.
Idea #2: Editorial statements by the editor, or director, or chief marketer. What are the hot issues this month? What are you focused on in terms of client service? Has there been some national or local event that everyone is concerned about? For example, as I write, the 9/11 anniversary is approaching. Show your readers that you are aware and concerned, by addressing a topic like this in your eZine.
Idea #3: Useful links to book titles, TV shows, art exhibits, outings, of interest to your readers. People are interested in what\’s happening. Show them how aware you are, and how interested you are in connecting them with important activities.
Idea #4: \”How To\” articles are frequently of interest. Are you a home chef service? Provide a short article about food storage-for example, how to keep food hot when it\’s delivered. Are you an electrician? An article about energy saving is bound to be useful to your customers.
Idea #5: Sales and special offers are also of interest. Include a \”call to action\” in your eZine, something that is directly interesting to your readers. \”Contact us for more information about this month\’s sale on wine from Chile,\” for example. Use the coupon form available in your eZine template.
Idea #6: Have you hired new staff? A new volunteer director, for example, or a new head of customer service? Your readers will be interested to know, since they already are connected to you, about the people who affect the services they receive.
Idea #7: Think about graphics as well as words in making your eZine interesting. It\’s easy to find images on the internet that add zest to your newsletter and relieve your reader\’s eye from too many words. But it\’s not just pictures that add interest. Color is pleasing to the eye and attracts the reader.
Idea #8: Occasionally look for an unusual font and use it to surround a photo or announcement. (But always be very careful not to overdo these fonts-be sure to treat them like pictures, not letters.)
These are eight good ideas for your eZine newsletter. However, when using ideas one through six be sure to use only one or two of them. Remember that an eZine newsletter is read on line, in an inbox or on a Blackberry. People are not looking for long passages or multiple articles, but for essentials. A lengthy eZine with four or five items will usually be deleted fairly quickly, no matter how interesting the content. Save extra items for your website, or for another issue.
