Many Factors Can Cause Leaky Guts

Take a look at the many causes of Leaky Gut Syndrome. You will be amazed at how many causes and just how varied they can be. But what I hope you take away from this article is that, these causes can be reversed and in many cases even cured. Read on…

Our gastrointestinal system is designed to take the food we eat and transfer it into energy that our bodies can use. This process begins in the mouth, where we masticate our meal. Simply chewing causes the salivary glands to release enzymes that begin to break down what we are eating. Chewing your food well can make a big difference in how well your body will be able to digest the food and gain nutrition from it. Big chunks are harder to break down and can actually contribute to the development of leaky guts. When food enters the stomach, hydrochloric acid, one of the gastric juices, is released to assist in dissolving what has been eaten. From there, the meal goes to the small intestine where nutrients are extracted through projections called villi and passed to the bloodstream. The large intestine removes water and vitamins, and the digestive process is now nearly complete.

Under normal, healthy conditions the walls of both intestines are impermeable to large particles and toxins. Not only are the cells tightly packed, but there is also a protective mucus coating which helps not only to keep the wrong things from entering the system, but also to prevent damage to the intestines from acids and enzymes. Leaky bowels occur when these walls have been damaged in some way and large particles of partially digested food and fat pass through into the body itself.

Toxins that are normally excreted can also be absorbed into the bloodstream. These things are not meant to be circulating in our blood and when they do, all manner of problems can arise.

Very often, an autoimmune response is triggered by these ‘foreign bodies’ in the blood, and some people will go on to develop celiac disease, colitis, Crohn’s disease, asthma, or arthritis. All of these are serious conditions that can interfere with normal daily activities.

Leaky bowel syndrome symptoms can include diarrhea, breathing difficulties, joint pain, and even insomnia. Leaky bowel syndrome is a chronic condition that often goes undiagnosed by the medical profession, leaving the patient to suffer for years before relief is found.

A systemic yeast infection is often one of the major causes of leaky bowels. Unless it is kept suppressed by healthy intestinal flora, yeast can multiply to such an extent that it will mutate to a fungal stage. This fungus, like the fungi that live in the wild, will produce structures called hyphae, which are similar to roots in ordinary plants. And, like roots, hyphae will grow down through a substrate to find nourishment. When hyphae are present in your body, they will use the substrate available – the walls of your small and large intestines. As the hyphae develop, they spread apart the cells in the intestines, allowing undigested particles, acids, and toxins to seep into the body and ultimately into the bloodstream.

There are a number of factors that can cause yeast to go wild, and one of the greatest is the use of antibiotics. No one would deny that antibiotics have saved millions of lives and that they need to be used to fight infections. However, antibiotics often destroy the good intestinal flora – the acidophilus and bifidus bacteria that keep the yeast in control – when the pathogenic bacteria is also killed off.

Another common contributing factor to yeast overgrowth and leaky guts is the use of birth control pills. These pills rely on estrogen to prevent conception. However, the extra estrogen that these pills supply also helps the proliferation of Candida yeast, which can result in problems with the intestines. This is also why so many women who take birth control pills suffer from recurring vaginal yeast infections as well as leaky guts.

Most people are on a municipal water supply that adds chlorine to make the water safe to drink. However, it has been found that chlorine can destroy the beneficial bacteria in the intestines, once again allowing yeast to grow. Filtering water with a top-of-the-line water filter can remove chlorine, but the yeast overgrowth must still be dealt with.

Although it is possible to get prescription medication that will kill yeast, the root cause of the problem – the absence of beneficial bacteria – will still remain. Unless your system once again harbors a lively population of these, the yeast overgrowth will eventually return as the yeast population rebuilds itself. Curing this condition will probably only become possible with the use of leaky gut syndrome supplements such as L-Glutamine, acidophilus, and bifidus. These supplements can help to restore your gastrointestinal system to its proper condition naturally and safely.
