Modern Paintings and Their History

Modern paintings are part of the art movement that began in the middle of the 1800s and continued onward through the end of the 1970s. This time period was a time when what was considered the norm was cast by the wayside and in its place was freedom of expression in unprecedented style. During this era, there were many new things being considered, such as the effects of natural light on nature and the use of many different colors and hues.

Modern paintings all seem to lean toward the genre of abstract art. Even the subjects that were depicted were a break from the usual types of things and people that were once considered acceptable to portray on canvas.

Before, prominent ladies and gentlemen sat for posed portraits inside of studios or their homes. Now the painters were taking to the outdoors to do their work and their subjects wildly varied from prostitutes to dancing nude subjects.

Modern paintings is said to have begun in the year 1863 in Paris. This is the year that Edouard Manet presented his painting entitled, “Le dejeuner sur l\’herbe” or (The Luncheon on the Grass).

It was from here forward that impressionism was born along with romantics and realists. These are said to be the true pioneers of the movement known as Modern Art. Later other types of painters would be born from this, such as expressionists, cubists, fauvists and futurists.

Impressionists always had the point of view that what they see is mostly a reflection caused by the light of day and not the actual topic of the painting. This is why they seemed to favor painting in the natural light of day out of doors in an effort to capture those reflections which would be a truer depiction of what was actually seen by most people. Modern paintings capture this essence greatly.

Modern paintings and art found their birth to be with artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cezanne, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. These artists were crucial in this movement.

Over the years, many pieces of literature and books have been published on this subject. It is a vast amount of different styles and it is difficult to summarize in one mere volume of work.

There is also a museum dedicated to this type of art in midtown Manhattan in New York City, New York. Here the art lover will find not only paintings, but literature that follows this movement as well as sculpture, drawings and artist’s books. Scholars have studied here as well as many various artists.

This movement changed the way that art is created and the way it is perceived by those who behold its beauty and capacity to captivate. It began the birth of many things that were the true spirit of freedom of expression, as well as the independence to depict impressionism through lively paints, abstract interpretations and subject matter that was unheard of before it came to be an accepted part of the art world.
