Sky Sports Football Rights

The British Premiere League is big business. Football is massive in England. The Premiere League is the crowning glory with teams like Manchester United, new money men Manchester City (now reported to be the richest club in the world thanks to their Billionaire Arab owner), Chelsea (Billionaire Russian owner), Arsenal, and now with the re-emergence of Liverpool under the helm of ex legend player Kenny Daglish.

The game in England is fast and exciting, the skill levels are tremendous. Players from all over the world grace the teams. The only way to watch most of the live matches with English commentary is with Sky TV. There are 20 teams in the Premiere League and they play 2-3 times per week depending on the schedule and depending on Sky TV.

Sky TV pays the British Premiership millions each year for the rights to record all the games. They actually record every match at the weekend. Most of the games start at 3:00pm on a Sat, with a game at 1:00 and 4:00 on a Sunday. There is one game on at 12:45 on Saturday and Sky usually shows this live and the two Sunday games. For this coverage Sky TV subscribers usually pay around 20 pounds per month.

But hang on a minute they record all the games, why do they not show the 3:00 pm games, and even let you follow your team? They are after all recording all the games. The BBC does the same and they show the game highlights with Gary Lineker, Mark Laurenson and Alan Hansen every Saturday and Sunday night. It’s a British institution.

But get this, not only do Sky record all the games, they actually sell the live rights and display the games live, every single one of them all around Europe and the rest of the world. Many websites even stream the game live! How sickening is that? You live in the country of the Premiership and you cannot watch your game of choice?

Sky complain that the have to pay the Premiership too much money for the games they are allowed to show, and it would cost too much for them to be profitable if they were to show more games. The teams in the Premiership get a share out of the TV rights. Managers like Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson have come into contention with this system saying Sky have too much power and can even dictate when games should be played. Ferguson said they are shoving in too many fixtures too close to each other, especially in the case of European matches.

Now new European satellite stations are muscling in on sky. They are taking the games that Sky beams out and adding their own foreign commentary in. They are then broadcasting these into pubs and houses in England. The commentary is not in English, it may be Chinese, German or Italian, but at least you can watch your game of choice. Sky even tried to take the stations to court but lost out. Lets hope the price comes down and more game choice is made available for those of us who love our footy.
