Slate Flooring

It’s likely you tend to order more material than you really need when undertaking a do-it-yourself task. There isn’t anything worse than running out halfway through a job and having to place another order and wait for delivery. If you’ve just laid a slate patio area or similar and now have a pile of slate pavers sitting somewhere in your garden, now’s the time to put them to good use and make a stepping stone path. This means you put your left over slate pavers to good use, your garden is more attractive, and in particular, kids just love jumping between the slate pavers.

Have a look around your garden area to find the best place to make your slate stepping stone path. It doesn’t necessarily have to begin and end anywhere; you can make it as abstract as you want. Maybe you have a particular border that’s special. A few pavers set around the edge will make the border more attractive. Perhaps you have a water feature somewhere in your garden. Lay a few slate pavers from your patio area to the water feature, so you can get to it whatever the weather. You could lay slate pavers up to the water feature and then on to some other feature in your garden and then back to the patio again, so you go a journey around the garden.

Obviously, what you decide to do is based upon the number of slate pavers you have left over. Count them up and then work out the best way of using them. When working out the number you need to complete a stepping stone path, base the distance between each slate paver on a short stride. Just walk normally up your garden and see what distance there is between each step you take. If you want to make it a slow stroll then decrease the distance, but if you want to walk at usual speed then increase the distance. Remember from a kid’s point of view they like to jump, so bear this in mind, if you have kids.

You can simply lay the slate pavers straight onto the ground; just make sure the area where the slate is placed is level. This is the fastest method and can be completed in a couple of hours, but if your garden is laid to lawn, then it means it will take you longer to mow the lawn as you will need to trim around each slate paver every time.

Alternatively, for a better effect, put each slate paver into position and mark around the paver. Lift off the paver and then dig out the area you’ve marked to the depth of the paver. Sprinkle a layer of coarse sand onto the base area. This ensures the paver will sit firmly and level. Lay the slate paver back into position and back fill around the edges of the paver using coarse sand. This method looks more professional and of course means you can mow your lawn much easier.
