Small Parts Manufacturing – Outsourcing Can Save Time and Money
Back in the day, most manufacturers had what is called “turn-key” operations. This is basically where one company does everything necessary to get a product to market. This included designing the product, creating the pieces that would be assembled to make the product, all the way to packaging and shipping the finished product to its end destination. Those days have changed. Now, it is no longer practical for one company to have a complete operation. Due to the complexity and manufacturing costs of most products, the need to focus on a smaller part of the overall product has caused many more specialized companies to enter the scene. Not all of these companies are high profile businesses. Most are in the background, receiving little or no accolades. However, the importance of their work is enormous. One of the more critical areas that are being outsourced now is OEM die cutting. This goes hand-in-hand with contract die cutting. What these companies do is produce small pieces that are necessary for the assembly of much larger equipment or machinery.
There are now many companies that are experts in the production of small parts. They have engineers and specialists who work in production teams to develop parts for other manufacturers and retailers. Other employees specialize in quality control to insure the best end product is produced. The project begins with a request for a particular part that will usually be a small part of a much larger project. The request can be quite detailed, or it can be a simple drawing with a few details, in which case, the design team will create a detailed computer-rendered mock-up that is then approved by the client. The cooperation of client and manufacturer is critical from the project beginning until the final parts are in place and working.
Huge machines depend on lots of parts in order to function properly. Sometimes a minor part can play a huge part in a piece of machinery. For instance, gaskets and O-rings are cheap and, therefore may be considered of low importance in relation to the overall enormity of a new project or machine, or even an established piece of equipment. However, there can be major problems if the gasket is incorrectly made and does not fit properly. Attention to details is very important, especially when a malfunction will result in loss of production or perhaps end up in safety issues.
Even if, or maybe especially if, you are trying to develop a new product, and you plan to build only one prototype of that product, you will want to have parts that fit together perfectly and do the job expected of them. If there is a failure due to a problem with a small, seemingly insignificant part, you will not get the correct data during testing. That is why it is important to have a professional company produce the pieces that go into the production of your prototype.
Finding a company that can produce the small parts you need may take some time and research. Some of these producers, in fact most of them, will have manufacturing plants outside the US. This is just a matter of economics. The best way to find a company that can do your job is to do some research. Start with colleagues that have had similar needs. Another place to look is in professional associations. Once you have found the right match for your own needs, you can form a professional partnership that will benefit both businesses.
