Staircases and Fireplaces

Two areas that people often focus on when renovating their home would be redesigning the staircases or updating the fireplaces. Both of these areas can dramatically change the look and feel of the home.

Many times fireplaces can be a reflection on the age of the home because they look dated. If a home was built 30 years ago, then the interior will no doubt exhibit signs of that time period such as paneled walls. These are the things that people immediately want to change about a home in an effort to make it more modern and to give it their own signature of style and interior design.

The first thing needed to do is evaluate any fireplaces to see if the update will need to be purely cosmetic or if there are structural problems that need to be dealt with first. Problems inside can range from aged to missing brick or smoke damage that needs to be repaired before any other work can be done. Once you have had an inspection done on the structure, then it’s time to decide what you want to do to the exterior to update it.

When you are renovating fireplaces, you can pick from a wide variety of materials such as stone, brick, crushed glass, ceramic tile, and many more. Of course, you can also opt for a prefabricated mantel instead of using this type of work.

Your contractor will be able to tell you all of the different options that are available and the costs involved in each one. You’ll then be on your way to having a beautifully modern centerpiece in your room or rooms.

Another area that often shows the age of the home would be the staircases. In older homes, often the railing is an absolute reminder of the 1970’s or 1980’s because it is wrought iron.

Some will have carpeting which isn’t really what most homeowners want these days. Most prefer no carpet at all to complement the rest of the house which is often times a hard wood floor theme throughout.

Some have the spiral type of staircases that was popular a few decades ago but not so much now. These can be hard to navigate and even a little dangerous where small children are concerned.

Whatever type of staircases that you may want to change, your contractor can absolutely suggest many ideas for updating the railings and steps. Of course, the first order of business would be to make sure that it is structurally sound before proceeding onward with any type of renovation. This can be done with a thorough assessment beforehand.

If the structure itself is safe and sound, then your next step will be deciding on what type of materials you want to use. You can pick from many types of materials including composites and various different types of woods such as walnut, oak, cherry, pine, and many more.

These two areas can make a huge difference in the before and after picture of your home, and by renovating these two different points in your house, you may find that you have added quite a bit of value overall as well.
