The man on the street, the highly paid executive sitting in the corner office, the surgeon patches up broken bones, the unemployed social worker, or just about any other normal person barely gives it a thought. But there are some people working behind the scenes who are ensuring our safety as their number one priority. These people employ such things as a vibration test shaker, or a total vibration shaker system in their daily jobs. Using these tools, they made the world around us more stable and secure.
What do these three things have in common: a 30 story office building, the family SUV, and the generator that runs your local hospital when the power goes out? They don\’t appear to have anything in common, but they actually do. Each of them is subject to engineering and structural guidelines that are monitored and recorded as a matter of public record. It is extremely important that these and so many other structures and items of machinery operate safely. That is why there are companies and specialized equipment whose specific job it is to ensure long life and operating efficiency of things like the bolts and engine mounts of a hospital generator, the beam structure of a high-rise building, or the tie rods that operate the steering of your SUV.
Just consider some of the ways your life would be affected by the failure of some of the common machines and structures that you might come in contact with. In fact, your life may have been impacted already. Have you ever had a vehicle recalled because they discovered that certain parts and structural defects? Or, have you ever had a flight delay after the ground crew found a crack in one of airplane wings? These kinds of things would happen much more frequently if it were not for the companies are responsible for making sure that all parts work properly.
The process involves using a device that would excite a structure or some other type of object over a period of time to ensure the integrity of that object. It could be tiny objects such as a rivet or a bolt that can be attached to a table. The machine is attached to the table and it excites the tiny object rapidly. There are different ways of providing the impulses. Sometimes it is with impacts from a hammer, while other times the reverberation comes from attaching a wire to the object and sending an electronic signal through the wire causing stress similar what would happen in normal operations with that object. In the case of much larger structures, such as the office building referred to earlier, much larger devices are needed. These devices would be attached to the structural elements, and use of electro-dynamic or electrohydraulic machinery over periods of time would use to shock the structural elements.
The people who work in this field do so without much recognition or glory. However, the public should be thankful that they are on the job. Without their efforts and expertise, most of the things that we take for granted might be falling apart around us.
