Studies Show Flowers Bring Major Changes to the Elderly in Asia
Numerous studies have been carried out to prove the great effect of flowers to humans. Several of these studies have chosen to concentrate on the positive effects of flowers to the elderly.
A particular study conducted in 2009 by researchers at a prestigious university in Manila in Philippines subjected several senior citizens in a three-month behavioural study. The study revealed that the elderly persons exposed to flowers showed improvements in their emotions and behaviours. Flowers can lessen the depressive symptoms experienced by the elderly persons. It is a well-known fact that as a person ages, depressive moods start to manifest and take over on the normal positive feelings. But with flowers being given or sent to the elderly, their depressive and anxious feelings are sure to be lessened.
As a person grows older, the memory starts to experience lapses such that important things are sometimes forgotten. With the daily presence of flowers, the elderly showed improvement in their recall of personal matters such as events in their past. This is what researchers in Kuala Lumpur found out. The researchers hypothesised that further studies could lead to better findings that flowers can be used to reduce memory, concentration, and cognitive deficits of a person no matter what his or her age is.
Individuals are known to wear smiles on their faces whenever they see or smell flowers. The older persons are no different. They exhibit the same good reactions as they are handed flowers by caregivers at a geriatric care facility in Thailand. The elders showed remarkable elevations in their positive feelings as manifested by their enhanced good moods. They became more approachable and more responsive whenever someone was talking to them.
A separate study observed the behaviour of elderly persons who are still active members of the society by participating in different activities. Those who maintain their own flower gardens have more regular involvement in the activities of the society. Some of them showed expansion of their social networks as they proudly share the fresh cut flowers to their neighbours. Thus, flowers are also catalysts of new friendships despite old ages.
The lives of the older persons are entangled with many problems such as feelings of reduced worth in the families they belong. This is primarily anchored on the lessened or absence of involvement in generating income for the family along with increased expenditures for their needs and health. Elder persons who are given flowers on regular basis exhibited greater satisfaction and feelings of self appreciation.
These observations and studies are just proofs that flowers can have significant impacts on the lives of older persons especially those who are in their senior years. Because of the beauty, colours, and sweet smell of flowers, the elderly can be alleviated of their depressive symptoms, irritable moods, and cognitive deficits while uplifting their spirits towards feelings of raised self-esteem and self-worth.
In Thailand, there are numerous online florists that offer a great assortment of flower arrangements. Grab the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of your grandfather or grandmother or even to your parents who have entered their senior years.
