The EPA’s Most Wanted

Nearly everyone has heard of America’s Most Wanted or the FBI’s most wanted criminals list, but few people know of perhaps one of the most important wanted lists our there. The Environmental Protection Agency, the agency that monitors corporations’ impact on the environment, has a short list of wanted criminals, known as the EPA Fugitive List.

One of the most wanted criminals on the EPA’s Fugitive List is Peter Martin Kuhn. Peter served as the Chief Executive Officer for the French Gulch Nevada Mining Corporation and also served as an executive for Bullion River Gold Corporation. Both of these corporations were involved in improper mining practices and evidence shows that Mr. Kuhn knew of these hazardous practices. He has been implicated in a cover up that took place in an attempt to hide the fact that the mining company was using illegal practices to dispose of hazardous waste. The waste contained extremely dangerous levels of lead as well as arsenic. The dangers of arsenic exposure include blindness, cancer and even partial paralysis. Scientists have long known that lead exposure can lead to reproductive issues, kidney failure, and developmental problems in young children.

A grand jury decision on July 1st 2010 produced an indictment that charges Kuhn on five different counts. The indictment includes one count each of “depredation against United States property”, a further counts dealing with conspiracy and aiding and abetting, negligent discharge of a pollutant into a water of the United States. The indictment also includes two counts of making false statements. These indictments, for now, have not been proven in a court of law and can only be called allegations, but if Kuhn is convicted on of all charges he could spend as many as 20 years in jail. Kuhn has disappeared and so he has been added as the eighteenth member of the EPA’s fugitive list.

The Environmental Protection Agency originally created their fugitives list in December of 2008. If you would like information about the people on the list you can visit their website. The site contains all of the information about the alleged crimes, personal descriptions, and other important information. The people who have been added to the EPA’s fugitive list have all been convicted of, charged with, or indicted for breaking environmental laws or criminal codes. Like any wanted list information about how to report any leads you may have can be found on the list’s website.

Since the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency’s fugitives list in 2008 there have been seven fugitives tracked down. Two surrendered after the public become involved in the hunt while five of them were arrested or captured by law enforcement acting on internal or public tips. The record of prosecution of these criminals is strong. Only one of the fugitives had charges dropped against them after a hung jury. Five of the fugitives were sentenced for their crimes and one was convicted and is still in the sentencing process. The Environmental Protection Agency sees violators and conspirators against environmental laws and real criminals and their fugitive list is working to help bring these criminals to justice.
