If you are new to golf, you will find there are many choices of golf balls. You have the one piece ball mostly used at driving ranges, to the 4 piece ball used by professional golfers. Years ago it was much simpler. There were two kinds of golf balls, the one piece and the 2 piece. Now there are so many different choices with the 2, 3 and 4 piece balls and the many variations within each type. This is because engineers can change the way a ball performs by changing the characteristics of the core and cover.

With all of the golf balls on the market, there is a ball for every skill level. So let’s examine the choices available to get you headed in the right direction to find your ideal ball. There are three basic types to choose from. In general, you should buy the type of ball that fits your handicap and swing speed.

The 2 piece golf ball makes up most of the market. The ball has a big solid rubber core with a plastic or urethane cover and a low compression rate, and is durable. The price is low and a good choice for the beginning golfer. So if you lose a few balls, it will not cost you so much. The main characteristic of the 2 piece ball is golfers with low swing speeds get good distance. The ball does not spin as much as the 3 or 4 piece ball so it’s more forgiving on stray shots. Golfers with slow swing speeds who play the 3 or 4 piece golf ball cannot compress the ball enough to get maximum distance and performance. The 2 piece ball does not have a lot of spin so will not stop quickly when it hits the green.

The next type of golf ball is the 3 piece hybrid. It has a solid core, a mantle layer and a soft plastic or urethane cover. It is less forgiving than a two piece ball and has a higher spin rate. The higher spin helps golfers to have more control with iron shots and better feel around the greens. Because of the 3 piece design, the cost is higher than the 2 piece ball. These balls are in the medium price range. They are good for middle handicap golfers.

The 3 and 4 piece balls have a dual core design, surrounded by a mantle layer and a urethane dimpled cover. They are best for low handicap golfers with high swing speeds. You get initial low spin off the tee for distance. Inside 100 yards these balls spin for control, and have a good feel around the greens. The 3 and 4 piece golf balls are the most expensive on the market.

If you are new to the game, try different types of 2 piece balls. This will help you find the one that is right for you. Whatever golf ball you choose, stick with the same brand and type. This will help with feel. Some of the major golf ball manufacturers are Titleist, Nike, Srixon, Bridgestone and Callaway.
