The Importance of an Anti Hardening of the Arteries Diet

If you are trying to treat atherosclerosis, going on an anti hardening of the arteries diet can help you immensely in preventing any more cholesterol and fat build-up in your arterial walls. A lifestyle disease, atherosclerosis is characterized by the hardening and narrowing of the arteries, both conditions brought about when there is injury to the interior lining of the arterial walls. As a result, the blood that carries fat, cholesterol, and calcium among others, is not able to carry these substances through the arterial walls. These substances eventually form plaque that builds up in the arterial walls.

There are many possible causes why the interior lining of the arterial walls suffers injury, among them smoking, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and diabetes. In a way, you could say that atherosclerosis could have easily been prevented. Needless to say, since the damage has already been done, blaming yourself would not do you any good at all. You just simply have to accept the consequences and take means to lessen the impact, prevent complications, and even possibly reverse atherosclerosis.

Many years ago, reversing atherosclerosis was a risky and expensive venture. It usually meant going under the knife to remove plaque build up. No wonder, back in those days, the procedure was taken as a last resort, and only by those people who can afford it. Nowadays, there are different ways you can possibly reverse atherosclerosis without surgery, beginning with an anti hardening of the arteries diet.

When you have atherosclerosis, your diet would have a very crucial role to its reversal. It\’s good to know that fats that build up and form plaque together with cholesterol and calcium and other substances, usually respond very well to changes in the diet, so a marked improvement in your lipid profile can be expected in just a few months, that is if you strictly adhere to the recommended diet. The appropriate diet in this case is one that is very low in fat and sugar. You will have to eliminate all forms of sugar, such as refined sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, even honey. This goes to say that you will not be anymore eating pastries, cakes, frostings on cakes, ice cream, doughnuts, sodas, anything that contains sugar, and foods fried in vegetable fat.

You will have to cut back on alcoholic beverages, too, especially sweetened liquors. Red wine may be beneficial to the heart, but not when you already have atherosclerosis. Avoid red meats whenever possible. Have broiled chicken (without the skin) or fish instead. Tuna and mackerel make healthier choices as they contain Omega-3 fatty acids.

Make sure to include lots of green and leafy vegetables in your diet, and try to eat them raw, because raw vegetables contain the most nutrients. Pomegranate and citrus foods have been linked to good heart health as well and these you must have in your diet. You should be having plenty of fiber, too, to help with waste elimination and to absorb bad cholesterol.

Strictly follow the anti hardening of the arteries diet and you can be on your way to reversing atherosclerosis naturally.
