The Past and Present of G. Harvey
G. Harvey is a renowned artist with many of his pieces being predominately displayed in numerous places in America. Whether it is in the Smithsonian, part of the United States government wall hangings, or on display in buildings of major corporations, his work is known throughout the country.
G. Harvey was born and raised just outside of San Antonio, Texas. He and his wife still live in Texas. They live in the historic district of Fredericksburg in their 150 year old home.
One could say that his art of the West is part of his makeup, part of who he is. They would be right in saying that since his grandfather was a trail boss from the young age of 18. Being part of what made the American West what it was is part of his heritage.
From a very young age, G. Harvey knew he had a love for drawing and sketching. That love developed into a greater love for painting with oils. He received his education from the University of North Texas.
Shortly after, he retained a position at the University of Texas at Austin. In 1963, he decided to leave his full-time job and venture out into the world of struggling artists. In 1965, he displayed his work at The Grand National in New York.
There, he was presented with the New Masters Award which was given to him by the American Artists Professional League. That launched his career where he got noticed by President Lyndon Johnson and many other prominent people.
This took his career down a path he couldn\’t even imagine that was filled with opportunities to create magnificent works. He continues to earn numerous awards for his work. Three books have also been written about him and his paintings.
Any number of the vast G. Harvey works all tell the story of America\’s past. His use of light in his paintings really brings drama and effect to his work.
He has done paintings of cowboys, cattle drives, homesteads, the White House, towns and cities bustling with people, just to name a few. It is clear where he gets his inspiration from looking at his work.
The story of America is a great one to try to place on to canvas. Being from Texas and being influenced by the West around him has come out in a number of amazing portraits of America.
His portraits of America really span the country as it once was. He has multiple paintings of people gathering at the local chapel. A beautiful glow of lights comes from inside the chapel beckoning those that may be passing by.
G. Harvey has also painted pictures of landmarks. Whether it is the San Francisco cable car, Central Park of New York City, or some of Yosemite\’s most notable rock formations, they are a reflection of who we are.
He has also done a number of pieces reflecting on his home state of Texas. It may be a portrait of a bustling downtown Dallas in days gone by, or other areas of the state that are less well known.
They also reflect the way of a Texans life as a rancher. In almost each of his pieces, one can also find the American flag. He and his works are a fitting tribute to our Nation.
