The Problems With Special Education in Cebu

Although there is no denying the fact that the city of Cebu is fast becoming the central hub for various business and commercial ventures in the Philippines, it is sad to note that there are major things that the city and its residents have failed to work on. One of which involves the concerns and overall welfare of people, especially children with special needs. Special education in Cebu definitely needs a lot of work to be done.

Special education is one of the many aspects of the education system across the globe. Technically, it involves the education process of students with special needs, with ample consideration of every student\’s individual differences and needs. Despite how simple it sounds, the entire matter is of great complexity. It makes use of systematic, tested procedures to ensure that a students special needs are duly met.

Special needs occupy a large spectrum of assistance needed by individuals who have disabilities that can be medical, mental or psychological in nature. These can include minor learning disabilities to more serious cases that involve inability to function efficiently and proceed with the Activities of Daily Life.

At the present, at least 150, 000 children in the United States are in need of special education services. More than 155, 000 Canadian kids have special needs in 2001. In the Philippines though, there is no clear number representing this part of the population. This is the start of the problem.

In the US, Canada and other first-world locations, having special needs is not a problem at all. There are various organizations that are constantly working to promote awareness of this situation and further help these kids and their parents in dealing with the whole ordeal. In fact, the government itself has taken responsibility over these children by providing for most, if not all, of their needs. Parents are able to get the assistance that they need for their offsprings.

In the Philippines, it is completely a different thing. For one, the parents themselves have a problem with the idea of having kids that they consider to be abnormal. It is very painful for them to see that their own offspring are not able to do what the regular kids do. Because of this, they fail to face the reality. As a result, their kids do not get the proper diagnosis and possible professional help that they need. Although the more modern Filipino parents nowadays are starting to realize the value of acceptance and early intervention in dealing with these conditions, majority of the population still succumb to the traditional way of thinking.

The next problem with special education in Cebu goes back to the country\’s largest loophole. The government itself is not exerting ample effort to help out with this problem. If only the Philippine government can do what the US and Canadian governments have been able to do for their citizens with special needs, more can surely be done for these people. Promoting special education in Cebu is just one of the primary steps that can be done make more people more knowledgeable about this situation.
