The Role of Tutoring Services in Contemporary Education

Huge state run schools are a recent phenomenon in the gamut of human history. For most of the million odd years of human existence families and tutoring services have taken care of education. Historically speaking the huge state run plants known as schools made their appearance as a consequence of the Industrial Revolution.

Born in the 1990s the Internet has heralded a quantum leap in civilization. Political revolutions and riots are organized with the aid of handsets. Markets in foreign exchange and commodities operate globally and continually. Data bases and access to world libraries from home computers have transformed the way that academic research is conducted. Extraordinarily it is not yet widely recognized that children are actually learning through the new media and not in schools which have become obsolete.

Many state schools are designed today as they were a century ago. Rooms housing twenty or forty people are stacked like boxes in ugly sheds. In communicative theory it is recognized that a small group consists of about six people. The most economical large group size is a hundred or more people. Few people are able to explain why schools are designed around the concept of groups that are neither big nor small but millions know how six people in a class of thirty are involved in a lesson whilst the rest gaze out of windows or do their best to disrupt learning activities.

The evidence that state schools hold students back academically is incontrovertible. Many people argue that it is justifiable because schools do teach people how to live with their peer group. However, it seems likely that socialization can be accomplished in other ways such as through clubs and interest groups. This also reduces the chances of young people being exposed to state indoctrination programs.

The ineffectiveness of state schools as educational institutions is demonstrated in communities where cultural values are conveyed to younger generations by tutors who are often parents, grandparents or tribal elders. Though attendance at state schools may add a smattering of literacy the effects of tutoring are much more deeply embedded in the identities of individuals than is any smattering of literacy or indoctrination acquired at a school.

Young teachers and tutors are cheap to employ and that may be why some education managers tend to favor them. The actions are rationalized by the argument that young tutors have better rapport with young charges. Facts suggest otherwise. The individual relationships that define tutoring are independent of age differences. Great trust and respect is a hallmark of relationships between grandparents and children, and this is often carried over to more formal situations.

It was tutors, often known as pendants who conveyed the achievements of Greek culture to the Roman Empire, and thence to the western world. Aesop\’s fables instruct and entertain to this day. Mature tutors like Confucius, Aristotle and Socrates needed no more than open air to exercise such influence over their pupils that civilization was shaped by their work.

In the new world that has been born as the Internet tutoring services will be available online. Experts will help individual students to learn independently, with interest and at the optimum pace. Children will no longer need to be subjected to state indoctrination programs or the tyranny of school bullies and the stuffiness of school assemblies. The path to better, more informed education is open and inviting courageous learners.
