Themes to Consider When Decorating Your Home

Interior home decoration styles

Have you ever walked into a home and your first impression was chaos and confusion and despite the fact that everything looked neat, clean and probably very expensive? That is what happens when one embarks on interior home decoration but without clearly defining what their core theme will be. Virtually all home decor ideas can be grouped in three categories – contemporary, classic and country.

Contemporary home decor is distinctly modern. The focus is on clean, crisp lines and lots of open spaces. Furniture is minimalist, geometric and almost comes across as strictly functional. Colors are predominantly neutral – white, black and grey in their various shades – but accentuated with bold colors such as deep red, yellow, lime green to draw one’s attention to specific accessories and architectural works.

Paintings, sculptures and plants are used to ‘fill up’ what would appear as completely empty space. Contemporary style in the home is somewhat the kind of interior home decoration you would find in a modern day office but with some tweaking here and there to make it suitable for a home environment.

Classic interior home decoration is the complete opposite of contemporary decor. Think about the kind of the kind of furniture and decor you would find in a home in the 1980s and 1990s. The paints used are decidedly natural – blue, green, yellow and terracotta. Furniture is huge and in plenty. Rich, dark woods are used for the settees, dining tables, beds and cabinets. Furniture is positioned not just because of the function it will serve but its beauty.

Furniture pieces are arranged meticulously in the room to ensure ease of movement despite the more crowded approach when compared with the contemporary style. You will be hard-pressed to find white in a home using classic interior home decoration style – if you must use a light color, cream is more like it especially for the walls. Classic also incorporates beautiful vases, vintage lighting (e.g. chandeliers) and gilded frames for paintings and photos hanged o the walls.

The third interior decor style is country. You can call it shabby chic. A home with county decor has the ambience of grandma and grandpa’s home up country. It has a worn-looking but warm feel that is tastefully done to take cognizance of modern decor sensibilities. Colors are muted such as sag green or cornflower blue. Country style can be expensive because you may need to look for some pieces of antique furniture if you want to pull it off well.

Country interior home decoration style is usually predominantly white either in its raw form or as an accent to the other colors used. As opposed to using potted green plants, dried flowers provide a better complement for the country decor. Some home owners have gone to the extent of distressing furniture just to make it look old and worn but without causing it deteriorate in functionality. Country home decor ideas look out of place with a concrete, marble or other modern floor type – hardwood would be best.
