Tips For Frequent and Novice Flyers – Get to Your Plane on Time

Most people know that it is best to be on time when traveling by plane. Why is this really something that needs to be discussed today? Because so many people don\’t! You don\’t want to be the person holding everyone else up, so keep some simple tips in mind.

One of the biggest problems is many people schedule their flight with just enough time to arrive at their destination on time. That\’s really not the best option. It is much easier to fly in early, with time to spare.

Why get there early? Because if you plan it that way, you won\’t have to worry if problems arise…. you\’ll still get there on time.

Have you ever sat through a long dealy in the airport? Since there are now fewer flights to select from, it can take a bit of time to get on a new flight in the case of cancellation. Most people know to expect problems when it is winter with all the snow and ice, but many forget about the vicious thunderstorms that can cause problems in the summer. There are summertime delays every year. Some information can be gained from looking at the past on-time records for a flight, but that gives no guarantee that weather won\’t become a problem.

If you\’re traveling abroad, you have to worry about monsoons, transiting foreign airports, or customs delays (like when they decided my Frangipani was not ready to enter the states), if you need to exit to connect to another airline for a longer trip.

One general rule of thumb for avoiding delays is to select the first flight of the day. Everything falls in a pattern, so one delay leads to many other delays later in the day.

If you can connect in more than one city, select the one with the nicest weather pattern. Try to avoid airports with lots of delayed flights… though many times these will be hubs, and you won\’t be able to avoid them. Just accept that a hub is always going to collect more delays than airports that are not as busy. It\’s sort of the nature of hubs.

Airports like Chicago-ORD are well known for weather-related delays, while others like San Francisco-SFO are better known for non-weather delays like alignment of the runway.

It\’s time to jump back to the initial idea of this piece and remember the importance of arriving early. Fly at least 24 hours before you need to be there (or back home). Connections should give a layover of at least two hours. Sure layovers are a drag, but if you have a tight connection, and that first flight is delayed an hour… your connection is BUSTED!!! So, what\’s next?

If you can\’t avoid a tight connection, have a \”plan B\” ahead of time. If you\’re delayed, knowing the alternatives will be valuable when you\’re trying to rebook.

Make sure to start your trip off right by getting the airport on time at the beginning of your trip.I made this mistake on my last All Inclusive In Hawaii trip. Most airlines now cut off check in for domestic flights 30 minutes to flight time. If you show up with less than a half hour to spare and you need to check bags, you are going to be out of luck. Even if you have thirty or forty minutes to spare, you could get caught in security and still not make it. Security delays are something you should just expect.

Bottom line, book the earliest flight possible, get to the airport with plenty of time to spare, and try to schedule loose connections. You will have a far more enjoyable trip if you get there a day ahead, get some rest, and overcome your jet lag stress free.
