Tips on Cleaning Window Blinds
Window blinds are good covers and dust filters for your windows. This is why they easily get dirty, which requires constant cleaning if you do not want them to accumulate a thick layer of dust. Even if they do not really seem dirty, they probably are because dust and dirt do not usually leave a mark or stain on the blinds. If you are not keen on cleaning them regularly, you may unknowingly be breeding bacteria in the blinds. As dust and dirt continue to build up over time, your home will no longer be safe for your family. This will also be evident when they smell after failing to clean them regularly. What is worse is when the smell from the window blinds would spread all over the room, possibly damaging the other pieces of furniture in it. To avoid spreading bacteria and unflattering smell at home, window blinds should be cleaned and maintained well.
Dusting
The simplest form of cleaning the window blinds is dusting them. This can already clean up the surface of the blinds so the slats will finally be free of dust and dirt which have gathered on them over time. When dusting the blinds, use a piece of cloth or rag. Afterwards, a significant change or improvement on the blinds will likely be observed. Make sure to include wiping the top of the slats as well as the other side for a more complete cleaning. Sometimes though, it would be best to use a dusting cloth or even a vacuum cleaner to make sure that dust is not removed from the blinds only to settle in other areas in the room. By using a dusting cloth, dust can be absorbed into the cloth, which prevents scattering the dust. This is also the same effect of using a vacuum cleaner.
Removing the Blinds
To clean the blinds well, those which are made of plastic, vinyl and aluminium should be taken out of the window. Wood is fine with just simple dusting and wiping to keep it clean. If wooden blinds get wet, it would not be good for the material. This is another reason why they should settle with plain dusting. The other materials used for blinds which can be soaked wet should have running water bathing them to completely clean them up on a regular basis.
Washing the Blinds
Wash the blinds thoroughly using a sponge or brush. Soak them in a tub with warm water in it. Choose any detergent that you want but do not use something with bleach to avoid leaving the blinds with a mark. It is even better to use only mild detergent to avoid damaging the blinds colour. After soaking it in the tub, rinse it thoroughly to wash off the detergent and hang it until it dies. Install the blinds back to the window and wipe them again with a dry rag to completely remove any drops of water left in it. This can help keep the blinds clean for a long time.
