Originally established as the Van Doren Rubber Company, it manufactured shoes and sold them directly to the public. The shoes ordered were typically ready for pick up the same day. Vans were first sold on March 16, 1966 in Anaheim, California by Paul Van Doren and his three business partners. The shoes sold on that day would later become known as the Authentic.

During the 1970’s, Vans saw rapid growth throughout the skateboarding community of southern California. Their rugged fabric and sticky soles made for the perfect shoe and caught on with the BMX community as well.

Although the Van Doren Rubber Company saw its fair share of financial hardships during the 80’s, the brand finally made a comeback in 1994.
