Weird and Odd at the Auction: Who Would Bid on That?!!

Weird or odd items at auctions are gaining a lot more interest. Maybe people are getting weirder, or they are just more willing and comfortable to show their weirder side. Maybe the fascination of freaks and freaky things gets our attention away from our mundane lives. Regardless, strange, freaky and odd items are auctioned every day, and strange, freaky and odd characters are drawn into it like pollen to a bee. Whether you have a strange or odd item to auction, or you are one of the strange and freaky people trying to bid on said item, or just someone looking for great entertainment and crazy anecdotes to tell around the lunch table, these weird and odd auctions are the place to be.

The quickest and easiest access to an absurdity auction is through EBay. They have a category named “Everything Else” which will lead you through several subcategories such as adult, metaphysical, religious, funerals, etc. These in themselves are entertaining to read through, but the subcategories which are most freakishly entertaining are:

– Slightly Unusual

– Really Weird

– Totally Bizarre

These auctions are great fun. They include everything from potato chips that resemble famous people and unique dust bunnies (?) to rare Nazi coins and petrified dinosaur dung. Why do people sell these ridiculous items? Because people buy them! Simple as that. We have all heard the sayings “there is a buyer for everything” the ‘Everything Else’ category on EBay proves it.

Here are some examples of weird, strange and odd items recently sold on EBay’s Everything Else pages.

– An old tennis ball – 6 bids – sold for $65.

– An old N.Y. Great Meadow Prison doctor picture I.D. Card for $30. 9 bids.

– A Wall Street Ouija Board where you can \”Raise the spirit of your 401K\” for $29.99. 1 bid.

– A creepy haunted oriental doll sold for $29.99 -17 bids.

– A leather cowhide straitjacket sold for $333. – 1 bid.

– A partially eaten, 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich said to bear the image of the Virgin Mary sold for $28,000.

– Four golf balls were auctioned after being surgically removed from a carpet python that had inadvertently swallowed them whilst raiding eggs in a chicken enclosure. The story attracted considerable international attention and the balls eventually sold for more than $1,400. Thankfully, the python recovered and was released.

Why do people list these crazy and odd things anyway? One reason may be because it’s a great marketing tool for you EBay business.

Marketing boost using the Everything Else category

Believe it or not, the Everything Else category is one of the many unique ways to earn money for someone willing to think outside the box. This is how you can use this unique category for marketing yourself and other items in other categories.

– Thousands of people, everyday troll this category for a good laugh or a funny anecdote. There is your audience.

– You have an unconventional idea, item or offer that people would want to talk about, and post it to EBay’s Everything Else category. Be sure to include a unique description and great picture which will temp people to click on your item.

– The better the story or history of the item, the more interest it will garner and possibly create interest in your other items. A good story sometimes makes the difference between a successful listing and one with no bids. Some savvy power sellers in the Everything Else category know this, and are always on the prowl for unusual items up for auction that have no story attached, and presented blandly. They buy the item really cheap, re-market the item with great graphics, photo (perhaps a video attached) and story, and sell the item for hundreds of dollars!

– Cross promote your ‘regular’ items selling on EBay with the unique items by asking them to check out your other items for auction.

– It’s essential to provide “Email a Friend”, “Check out my Other Items”, “About Me”, “Check out my Store”, “Add me to your Favorite Sellers list” links within your weird item auction description to entice more traffic. As amusing as your item is, potential buyers want to know a bit about the person selling. You can showcase your ideas, humor or talents, while inviting tons of users to check out your other stuff for auction.

– The ‘viewers counter’ which eBay provides will help you to see the results of your marketing endeavor.

Regardless of your reason for clicking on the Everything Else button, it’s bound to be entertaining. You may be gaining an audience or just joining one, but the overall experience won’t be undone. You’ll find yourself saying “You won’t believe what someone was auctioning on EBay today!” before you know it.
