What is Movement Therapy?

Motion is one of the gauges in a person’s physical condition to know whether he or she is healthy or in need of medical attention. Movement has been a part of massage therapy for a long period of time due to its effectiveness in providing a wider range of motion, flexibility, physical coordination, structural integrity, and many more benefits.

Movement therapy or also known as dance therapy is a form of bodywork that is focused on motion using a combination of therapeutic and artistic actions.

The idea behind the therapy is that all things in the universe should be in constant motion in order to maintain health and physical awareness. When they become stagnant, they begin to deteriorate as their movement will be restricted or eventually lost. Physical therapist and medical experts believe that by constantly moving the body in the proper positions and directions, the body’s self-healing abilities are enabled. Thus, there will be an initial recovery program being initiated by the body itself.

The practice of dance therapy has been used in many parts of the world as a therapeutic program used on almost all individuals who have medical needs. Pregnant women, children, seniors, and even special people can benefit from the wonderful effects and health benefits of the therapy. The treatment is usually performed and instructed by a certified dance therapist who has earned his or her masters level in physical and emotional therapy.

In a movement therapy session, the treatment is usually done in a clinical setting comfortable enough for the client to be able to relax during the whole length of the medical care. The dance therapist will determine what type of treatment will suit the medical needs of the client based on his or her evaluation. Although some patients would suggest or request a particular technique which may either be an eastern or western style of treatment, most of the time, the decision is given to the therapist. Most of the techniques are similar to any movement re-education methods that are used for the same purpose of allowing the body to naturally get rid of restrictions that hinders fluid motion. Aside from the physical therapy, meditation as well as breathing exercises is taught to the client during their therapy session. The mental focus during the session allows both the therapist and the patient to improve the efficacy and progress of the treatment for a faster recovery rate. Proper breathing also helps the body to trigger its ability to constitute self-healing that is essential for the restoration of any damaged area of the body including the restriction of movement.

The benefits that can be gained from movement therapy are also similar to the techniques that emphasizes movement re-education such as the improvement on the range of motion, greater flexibility of the body, stronger muscle tissues and bone structure, improved posture, good flow of blood, oxygen, and lymph fluid, enhanced immune system against sickness and disease, lower chances of injuries, increased self-awareness and alertness, enhanced mood and clear mind, better joint conditions, and improved self-confidence.
