Impressionists are defined as those that give you highly accurate depictions of light using colors to describe how that light changes throughout the day. They do this through showing how times passes and by using everyday items and modern period pieces that would be something that you would encounter each day during your daily routine.

Impressionists also use extremely small brush strokes when creating their paintings. This is another characteristic that defines this type of work.

They also characterize motion in their works and its importance emphasized by how it is used in each painting and period piece. You will also find that the painter will choose angles that aren’t necessarily the norm from which to interpret their painting.

Another thing that impressionists did that made them different from those who came before them was to change the venue from which their artistry was derived. Usually any type of painting or portrait was done indoors in some type of studio however these impressionists paintings have often been completed out of doors.

Those who first defined themselves as impressionists were considered renegades of sorts. They valued their ability to express themselves in ways that weren’t acceptable or even thought of beforehand. Their approach to art was shocking to some of the period which took place during the nineteenth century.

Their work made the viewer immediately notice the principle subject. The background was softened somewhat to accentuate that subject and the portraits were meant to capture the essence of a moment in time that was just coincidence that the artist was there in the right place at the right time.

It is believed that part of this movement was prompted by artists who felt as if they were in direct competition with the new found photography of the era. The public was quick to point out that the prior paintings did not truly depict things in the same way that a photograph could.

Impressionists decided to come up with a method of creating paintings that looked just as realistic, if not more so, than photography but with their own interpretation.

Ultimately in the end, photography probably aided the artists more than challenged them because it reaffirmed that the work that they did could not be duplicated by a mere snap shot of something. Of course at this time, photography lacked something that artists could say that they had in abundance and that is color.

At that time photos weren’t even black and white, they were more of a brownish and tan hue. The color left the artists with a feeling of having an overwhelming advantage over the camera that could not capture the vivid reds of the roses, the beautiful blues of the sky, the greens of the grass or the yellows of daffodils. This would set the artist apart from the photographer in a very important way.

The fascination that these painters had with nature and light led to a completely new genre of painting in the art world, completely different from the watercolor and oil painting which had preceded it. It has been revered by both artists and patrons ever since.
