10 Tips in Maintaining Your Locks Post Hair Transplant
Hair transplant has proven itself to be an effective measure in restoring that full head of hair. But just because you’ve grown it back to its old glory that you just taking care of it. You have to follow certain measures to make sure that it stays there and that it grows healthy and beautifully. So here I give you ten tips on how to maintain your hair after a hair transplant.
1. Don’t touch your hair grafts especially during the first few hours after surgery. Not only will you risk it from falling off, but you also introduce bacteria into the area, increasing your risk for infection.
2. Sleep in an upright position for the first few days after surgery. Stack 2-3 pillows to keep your head elevated. This will also prevent bleeding and swelling.
3. For any pain or discomfort do not use Aspirin or Ibruprofen because this can only increase your risk for bleeding since this medications have blood-thinning effects. Take only what the surgeon prescribes you to ensure that you don’t experience any complications.
4. You can also apply a cold compress gently over your head (but not the area above the grafts) to relieve any pain or discomfort. This will also help lessen the swelling thus increasing the rate of healing.
5. You cannot shampoo or wash your hair for the first 24 hours after surgery. But you can resume regular washing after that. Make sure that you use a PH balanced shampoo. Also remember to wash your scalp gently and avoid vigorous rubbing to avoid dislodging or scratching the scalp. You also need to shampoo regularly to properly remove blood that has crusted dirt and oils.
6. If you see scabs forming, please take every ounce of self-control and avoid picking on them. This will put you at risk for infection and can lengthen the healing time. Worse thing that could happen is that your hair grafts could get dislodged.
7. Avoid strenuous activities immediately after the procedure and the first few months thereafter. Also avoid bending over, bumping your head or lifting heavy objects, this is to prevent stressing out your scalp and your body resulting to implants becoming dislodged or bleeding.
8. Avoid direct sun exposure for the first 3 months after surgery. If you must go outside, protect your scalp with a sunscreen spray that has a good SPF coverage, preferably 45 at the least.
9. If you have used hair loss medications before the procedure, you need to continue this after the surgery. If you have not used any hair loss medications before the procedure then there is no need to start one now. But take this up with your doctor for better assessment and appropriate advice.
10. In the event of ingrown hairs which can present itself like a pimple or a bump you need to apply a warm cloth over the area. Do this for ten minutes, three times a day. After this you prick the center with a needle that has been soaked in alcohol. If there is no relief after 3 days, contact your hair transplant surgeon immediately.
