5 Ways To Prevent Date Rape

Peers are commonly seen in adolescents, for their psychosocial task is identity vs. role confusion. Some tend to join in a group, and do almost everything their friends do. They engage with such activities, for they want to determine the people who won\’t judge their personality and accept them without hesitation. In finding their own self, there are times when they unknowingly walk on a wrong path.

At times, we opt to do something awkward because we\’re in the middle of peer pressure. There may be moments when we do our friend\’s request, yet we could also hurt another person without even noticing it. In this case we can possibly ruin our relationship with people whom we aggravated. As a result, we lose their trust.

As teeners become more exposed to this certain situation, they also tend to develop conduct disorder. Some drink, and worse, they use drugs. This is one of the reasons why date rape occurs. Date rape is also called as acquaintance rape wherein the perpetrators are known to victims.

With this high prevalence, as a mother, how can you protect your children? Mothers have the basic instinct on how they can properly take care of their child. Additionally, here are some important suggestions.

1. Regulate curfew hours. Since date rape commonly happen in children who belong to 16 – 24 years old, provide them with enough explanation about the needed restriction. Always remind them that you are only implementing limitations because you care too much about their condition. By proper explanation, there is a high chance that they will surely understand you.

2. Don\’t give too much trust. Advise your children not to impart too much trust on their acquaintances. There are two types of peers; one who can help you grow, and the other will cause devastating effects in your life. As a teenager, if you\’re complacent that they won\’t harm you, then it\’s time to broaden your mind with lots of possibilities. Statistics revealed that in 28% of date rapes, the most common perpetrators are the victim\’s boyfriend.

3. Stun guns and taser. Prevention is better than cure. This is the reason why we need to equip our children with electroshock weapons if allowable. As humans, when we are faced on a dangerous situation, we tend to panic and forget necessary things to do. Having a self-defense tool can be convenient.

4. Self defense 101. This is a type of street defense using mixed martial arts. If your child finds it difficult to apply this technique, then he/she should try other self-defense programs that will be suitable for him/her.

5. Know when to report. If you know that an unusual situation is occurring, don\’t hesitate to report to authorities.

It is really difficult to protect our children especially when they are outside our home. However, if they had been raised with proper guidance, then we may become complacent that they can secure themselves from harm.
