The home should be a haven for the family, especially if there are kids. Your family’s safety must thus be ensured. The confines of a home should be enough for this. It must be heavily laden with security, to protect what’s in it: your valuables, especially your family.

Here are tips to increase the safety of your home:

Have a telephone. A telecommunications device is important when emergency arises. This can be used to call for help. Mobile phones are a better alternative to the landline, because you can bring them with you anywhere.

Burglar alarms can be installed. These notify the police when your house is intruded or when security is breached. These intrusion systems are usually an array of sensors, control panels and alerting systems. Fire alarms and extinguishers (or sprinkler systems and smoke detectors) will help in case of fire. Notification of the fire brigade will require time for them to reach the house, and so the primary defense must be immediate: extinguishers and sprinklers often will suffice. You may also opt to put up fire exits that are easily accessible to anywhere within the house.

Security cameras and other surveillance systems are useful for crime recognition and recording. Playback of the captured video will help incriminate thieves when they are caught on camera.

Dogs may help scare off criminals. Some watchdogs are trained specifically for this. The guard dog can be trained to discriminate between familiar people and strangers. It does not alert the owner of the presence of familiar people, but only when unexpected people or animals are seen. The community where your house is located may also be a source of security. Cops, firemen, hospitals provide the corresponding treatment that you need. Knowing where these are located helps you know where to find them, especially when needed.

When the family members are on their own, they should know how to handle danger. They may learn self-defense or carry with them pepper sprays or tazer guns. The pepper spray does not kill. The tasers can electrically shock targets with the right voltage so that they are neuromuscularly incapacitated, or in other words, immobilized temporarily, and not killed. Such incapacitation is temporary and the perpetrator regains his usual self. The immobilization buys you enough time, as does the pepper spray, in order for you to run away from danger.
