A SharePoint Search is a Spiral Upward in the Web

A platform intended to promote efficient document management in organizations has been called SharePoint search. Cooperation between workers is facilitated because they can work together to create documents, share information and easily access information that is relevant to themselves and others in the organization. It can be used to facilitate communication between people who work together.

Since we do not know the end point of our Internet evolution it is not really possible to evaluate the significance of this innovation. However it can be seen in the context of where we have come from so far. The Internet has been around for so little time that it can be safely assumed to be in its infancy in the realm of human affairs. In the 1980s the very earliest computers occupied a large room and had rows of switches operated manually.

The early professors of computer science taught themselves about the new developments in computers and were soon conducting staff development courses for senior workers who had to find out about keyboard features such as the space bar. For many the ability to cut and paste was an exciting discovery. Type writers had not ventured beyond the back space key.

In the few years since the earliest birth pangs of the internet there have been quantum leaps that have changed to world radically. In organizations there has been a struggle between order and chaos. At low levels some people waste time on games or irrelevant sites and at other levels information has been misappropriated and used dangerously in legal cases and the media.

A SharePoint installation is a response to quite an urgent need for order and efficiency. Workers can share information, store documents so that information is easily accessed and work together to creates files and documents that can be used cooperatively in their organization.

Business organizations are often motivated by profit and firms that help them to use computer technology effectively often use the word \’solutions\’ in their title and slogans. Academic organization which are less motivated by profit have perhaps been slower to come up with organizational solutions. Some academic departments have been run like miniature empires in the past, jealously guarding their academic turf. Now the platform that fosters sharing and cooperation allows for greater cooperation and efficiency.

In an organization there are many internal communication needs that materialize. These may have increased rather than decreases with the advent of computer technology because the world has become more complex. Administrators who struggle to streamline systems with organization need to control access this involves many problems. For example, if students are shut out of school computers systems for poor behavior their means to learning may be unreasonably compromised.

In any organization there may be a need for some people to share documentation that is not available to all. For example, executives may need to share information not available to lower ranking staff. This is the reason for an extranet, or section of the platform that allows access to some but not all. However, all people within the organization may at times need access to documents in the public domain and so SharePoint search supports the Internet as well.
