Headquartered in Arizona, US Airways has its main hubs in Charlotte, Las Vegas, Phoenix and Philadelphia. US Airways began as All-American Aviation in 1939. All-American Aviation delivered airmail to Western Pennsylvania and the Ohio Valley using single engine Stinson Reliant aircraft. Through mergers and buyouts, All-American Airways grew into Allegheny Airlines, US Air, and then US Airways in 1996. Since 1939, the airline has grown over the years to be the successful US Airways airline it is today.

Ten years after its 1939 launch, the airline changed its name to All American Airway. Along with the name change, the airline switched from airmail to passenger service. In 1953, All American Airways changed its name to Allegheny Airlines. Over the next 20 years, Allegheny Airlines expanded by adding the Douglas DC-9 jet to its fleet in 1966. In 1968, it acquired Lake Central Airlines and in 1972, it acquired Mohawk Airlines.

In 1979, Allegheny Airlines changed its name to USAir. In 1984, USAir acquired its first Boeing 737 which was the launch customer for the 737-300. In 1987, it acquired San Diego-based PSA (Pacific Southwest Airlines). In 1988, they acquired Winston-Salem, NC-based Piedmont Airlines. In 1989, USAir was one of world\’s largest airlines and operated over 5,000 flights daily. In the 1990s, USAir began flights to London, Frankfurt, and Paris, after an investment from British Airways which was the basis for one of the first transatlantic airline alliances. In 1996, the alliance with British Airways ended and USAir changed its name to US Airways.

In May 2000, US Airways declare it was going to be taken over by UAL Corp which is the parent company of United Airlines. However negotiations slowed and the offer was withdrawn in July 2001. In May, 2004, US Airways became the 15th member of the Star Alliance. In May 2005, US Airways Group and America West Holdings merged and the airline retained the name, US Airways.

Since the 2000 merger, the airline continued to grow. However at this time, US Airways was the leader in customer service complaints with 4.4 complaints per 100,000 customers. Despite poor customer satisfaction, US Airways was the top on-time airline in 2008 among the major 6 hubs and spoke carriers. In September 2004, a US Airways Boeing 737 crashed while trying to land at Pittsburgh International Airport. The crash killed all 132 people on board.

US Airways merged with America West in 2005 to become the 5th largest airline in the United States. US Airways provides 3,242 daily departures to 208 destinations in 31 countries. In the 1990s, USAir began flights to London, Frankfurt, and Paris, after an investment from British Airways which was the basis for one of the first transatlantic airline alliances. They airline carries over 79 million passengers per year and employs close to 31,000 workers. The US Airways mainline fleet consists of Airbus A330, A321, A320 and A319 aircraft as well as Boeing 767, 757, and 737 aircraft. The Express fleet consists of more than 295 regional jets and turbo-prop aircraft. Along with its triumphs and setbacks, US Airways continues to be a strong and competitive airline and is continually planning to grow and expand in the future.
