Are Corporate Gifts Still an Effective Marketing Tool?

Now more than ever, competition has been so high that distinguishing oneself from the pack is very important especially now that the other competitors are just a click away from the internet. Companies have been trying to come up with ways for competing against their competitors and coming up with unconventional marketing strategies. One of these strategies is by corporate gifts that are awarded to the customer for marketing purposes. This is still an effective way for corporate to market and improve their visibility in the market. However, there are certain ways that the corporate gift has to be presented to be effective.

First of all, the gift should be appropriate for the client no matter the circumstances. This means that the companies should clearly establish the likes and dislikes or preferences of the customers so that they can know what kind of a gift to offer them. It does not matter how pricey the gift is but if it goes against the customer’s beliefs it will not have the same charm as it was meant. An example is like offering a bottle of wine to a customer or prospective customer who never drinks and never advocates drinking. Secondly, the corporate gifts should be distinguished from promotional items. Some companies offer promotional items to their consumers hoping to get their loyalty but this does not work. There can never be any meaningful gesture for receiving promotional items. the gifts are supposed to make the receiver feel fond of the company’s products and make them even be able to recommend others to buy so no promotional items that do not have the same weight as the corporate gift.

Thirdly, it is never right to issue cash as an equivalent of a gift. This no matter how genuine it is intended comes off like you are trying to purchase loyalty from the prospective customers. You can issue any other type of gift, whether a service like a trip overseas, a spa experience or solid items such as electronics and other related items but never cash. This is even more important for government employees because it can be looked at like it is bribery and can cause serious image damages which would be the opposite of what was intended. Professionals such as doctors and lawyers can issue service oriented gifts such as free consultancy or others while manufacturing companies can issue solid item depending on what it is they manufacture.

Lastly, it is important to give some thought behind the gift so that when the recipient finally gets it, they can feel good about it and enjoy it. You should not just issue common gifts to just anyone because people have different preferences. This means that different people will like different gifts. Before deciding which gift you can give to your customers, you need to learn their likes and dislikes. You can do this by categorizing them by age, gender, religion and even other demographics that are relevant. This way you can be sure that the corporate gift becomes an effective marketing tool.
