Avoid The Mall: How Shopping Online Saves Money, Time, And Sanity
In our society when we venture outside of our home we must be clothed in something. This may seem superfluous in warm weather but it is a necessary evil. Even more evil is that we have to buy those clothes. Clothes don\’t fall from the heavens. They exist in stores. Stores exist in shopping malls way across town. Shopping plus malls plus stores equal torture. I would rather be anywhere and doing anything else than shopping in a clothes store in a shopping mall. Shopping depletes wallets and souls.
Then along came the internet and the ability to forget the mall and shop for clothes online. Some shoppers swear by trying on every article of clothing before they purchase anything. This is fine for other people. If the item is an expensive tailored suit or overcoat, it is probably worth while to try it on first. But these items make up an infinitesimal part of most people\’s wardrobe. Most of us wear pants, tops and shoes. These do not require a fitting. We know what size we wear. We know what we like. Trying on anything is a waste of time.
Besides online stores carry brands with size charts mapped out for all to see. You don\’t need to try anything on before you buy. These size charts come in handy particularly when buying goods made in Europe or Asia where there is a definitely different size interpretation. Nonetheless all measurements are published for you to see.
If done correctly, online shopping can produce huge savings. Discount websites and auction websites are full of name-brand goods at low prices. But you have to be smart about what you\’re buying; if it seems too good to be true, it is. If a Prada handbag is selling for $10.00, it\’s a fake. Use your good judgment on these things. I only buy new clothes online, even from auction sites. New clothes should always come with tags, and listings will specify. A jacket described simply as “new” may have been worn for a whole winter. A jacket selling as “new with tags” is likely just as new as anything you\’d find in the mall.
Clothes are not the only thing I buy on the internet. Anything I can buy online, I usually do: books, sports equipment, CDs, all kinds of things. It is easy to find what you need. My rule of thumb for finding online stores is simple and effective. In the search engine window I type whatever it is I am looking for and follow it with the words “online shop.”
Last month I was looking for a new tennis racket customized to my exact specifications. I googled “tennis racket online shop” and got numerous results from websites featuring tennis rackets and equipment. I immediately placed my order on the site of my choice and received my tennis racket delivered to my door less than a week later. It was perfect.
I can\’t tell you that I experience real joy shopping online. But I can do it while watching Monday night football if I wait for the half time festivities. I\’m almost unaware that I bought new jockey shorts and socks while enjoying the game. When the weekend comes around instead of fighting the traffic, hunting for a parking space and being annoyed by crowds while shopping at the mall for underwear, I will be doing something else that will not in the least torment me.
