Buffalo Grove Orthodontics Expert Uses Sesame Street to Help Children Quit Using Pacifier
BUFFALO GROVE, ILLINOIS – Sesame Street hosted a Put Down The Pacifier Day on November 4 that kids\’ dentistry experts, Drs. James Orbon, David Maddox and Cameron Wagner, used to help parents and their children make the transition.
\”The Sesame Street event gave a target to aim for, preventing the pitfall of perpetually procrastinating on making the change,\” says Maddox, a Buffalo Grove orthodontics exper.
The website has a lot of videos for children explaining the importance of getting rid of the pacifier and how to work through some of the feelings they may have about the process. It also offers resources to help children put down the pacifier, including useful tips and daily video clips.
Sesame Street\’s Elmo, the furry red monster, starred in the videos and documents his process of becoming a big kid who does not use pacifiers. The videos are about a minute long. In one clip, Elmo explains emotions he felt when he gave up his pacifier-sad and worried at first but happy and proud of himself after that. Other clips show him coloring a countdown calendar, making a sticker chart, packing up his pacifiers to give away, leaving them for the Binky Fairy and singing the Bye Bye Pacifier Song.
According to Wagner, the American Academy of Pediatrics also has information and tips that can be effective at getting rid of habits like thumb-sucking or pacifier use on their website, including the following:
– Praise and reward the child for not sucking on the thumb or pacifier. Sticker charts, daily rewards and gentle reminders, especially during the day, are also very helpful.
– If the sucking is to relieve boredom, keep little hands distracted with favorite toys or healthy snacks.
– If parents notice changes during your routine infant dental care in the roof of the child\’s mouth, the palate, or in the way the teeth are aligning, contact your pediatrician or pediatric dentist.
\”We usually give the deadline to discontinue pacifier use by age two, but the earlier the better,\” says Orbon, whose dental group also offers orthodontics like Clarity Clear braces and tooth-colored fillings.
The reason for the recommendation is that children tend to develop a deeper attachment the longer they use a pacifier and have a better chance of strongly resisting or \”arguing\” with the parents. The very reluctant child may need a more creative method to convince them. One mom says she had her daughter add her pacifier to a stuffed animal at Build-A-Bear Workshop, so the child could still sleep with the pacifier without having it in her mouth.
\”Just remember giving up the pacifier is your child reaching another developmental milestone so celebrate success,\” says Wagner.
