It was from the valiant president, Lyndon B. Johnson. In July 30, 1965, he signed into the law the Social Security Act of 1965, which amends the existing Social Security law. In the new Social Security Act, health insurance and/or program were included. Among the health program included was Medicare.

Medicare is a health insurance program that is provided to citizens who are 65 years old and above. These elderly people can avail of the insurance as long as they have been a citizen of the United States or one of its territories for at least five years. Other people can also avail of the insurance program if they have physical disabilities, congenital disorder or other serious ailments like kidney trouble and breast cancer.

It has several options which one can choose from. The Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. Part A or Hospital Insurance include inpatient cares, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and home health care. Patients who do not have long-term serious ailment can avail of this insurance. Part B, on the other hand, covers doctors\’ service, outpatient cares, preventive services for ailments and other medical supplies. Part B, also known as Medical Insurance, also covers several tests and services such as blood transfusion, kidney dialysis, chemotherapy, influenza and pneumonia vaccination, and organ transplantation. Other than that, Plan B also covers the medical equipment such as wheel chairs, prosthetics such as artificial limbs and breasts, canes and strollers. Through the Original Medicare, these parts can be acquired in Medicare institutions. In the Original Medicare program, the patient has the choice of the hospital, doctors and other health providers.

However, there are insurance companies that provide both Part A and Part B. These private insurance companies are approved by Medicare and follow the regulations and rules set by Medicare. The program is called Medicare Advantage Plan or Part C. In this advantage plan, there are plan doctors, hospitals and Medicare providers. Having this will save the time of the patient in choosing which hospital, doctor and provider will he or she likes. However, if one still wants to have a doctor that was not included in the plan, an additional payment is to be solicited from him or her. Medicare Advantage Plan also includes the Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage where one can get prescribed drugs at a lower cost.

Whatever program one plan to take, Medicare assures that the patient will surely benefit from the services.
