Different Types of Confidential Waste
The topic of confidential waste is a sensitive one for businesses, hospitals and government agencies. Now more than ever before, identity theft and other frauds that use personal information are a major concern. With so much information being entered and printed and stored, it’s no wonder that criminals are interested. For someone who is interested in stealing your identity or even a portion of it, getting his hands on your sensitive information can be like winning the lottery. That is why laws exist to protect privacy and require organizations to dispose of confidential waste in a timely manner, before any wrongdoing can occur. There are many different types of confidential waste that a good disposal company will take care of, so no one will ever see it again.
Basic paper files in some businesses fill filing cabinets and sometime entire rooms. These may include customer or patient files, or information about business clients. Sometimes, paper files might even include proprietary information about your own business. This type of confidential waste is an obvious choice for disposal, as sensitive financial information or medical records may be included. If the information is particularly sensitive, a confidential waste company will come right in and destroy your paper files on-site. This way you can see it all happen and feel secure that they are gone forever.
Another type of confidential waste is archived boxes of files and documents. Before privacy laws became prevalent, businesses would just pack old documents into boxes and stack the boxes in a warehouse of some sort. These boxes could contain virtually any type of sensitive information. Since archived boxes were all but forgotten when information became digital, getting rid of them is quite important, as a few missing boxes wouldn’t even be noticed until it’s too late. Archived boxes might contain old financial records, sensitive medical information, invoices or detailed customer files. A lot of the information may be old and useless to an identity thief, but it is still confidential waste that needs to be destroyed, because even a little valid information is too much.
School records are an example of confidential waste that most people wouldn’t include in the list, but it is still personal information. A college or university can compile quite a file of information on a student over his or her course of study. Disposing of that sort of information enables students to leave the school and start their lives without having to worry about that information getting out. Even old application forms for credit cards, loans or even jobs are forms of confidential waste that should be destroyed.
However, all confidential waste is not made of paper. Electronic media, audiotapes, videotapes, CDs and computer hard drives are also types of confidential waste that contain the type of sensitive information that is best destroyed. Hiring on an outside company to deal with all manner of confidential waste will ensure you’re complying with all applicable laws and that your customers and clients are protected.
