Distinct Features of Observatory Domes
One big problem that is faced by the astronomers nowadays is the time it can take to setup their equipment to take some photographs or astro-pictures. The bigger the telescope, the more times it will take to set it up. The weather is most times not stable as it only remains constant for a brief period. So, by the time the telescope is setup, aligned to the appropriate polar coordinates and connected to its computer system, the weather will have changed position. All efforts to observe will have been futile and observer will be left very frustrated. This is why building an observatory is very important. All the equipment (the telescope, computer system, connecting devices and others) to be used for immediate recording of events will have been set inside this lighthouse.
Another thing is that manufacturers of telescopes and other astronomer instruments have been innovating their products by adding more technology to their equipment. This added technology has unluckily made setting up of the equipment to take more time and also to pack back after use. Many astronomers have discovered that they do less work (observing) than they are supposed to because of this time constrain. All the so called expensive telescopes are just abandoned in a room or apartment and are hardly used. What is needed is both a permanent and mobile solution to house and operate telescopic equipment at a moment’s notice, whether in the backyard or in the field. The solution to this is combined together to make what we called observatory domes.
There are basically two types of privately owned observatory domes, the home dome type and the pro-dome one. While the home-Dome is designed and constructed to be mounted on another structure (for example on the roof of a garage), The Pro-Dome type have walls which may be solid or plastic one with entrance doors and are constructed to be mounted on a concrete foundation, deck, or flat level surface. There is no difference in the overall design or quality of materials used for these two types of domes. Only that the Pro-Dome models include additional parts and accessories like doors, deadbolt, locking system, rotation enhancements, trim items and others to make them hold to the foundation.
In order to prevent destruction during fierce weather condition like heavy rainfall, windstorm or other similar situations, every dome must be firmly tightening to its foundation. The foundation needs to be strong enough to prevent the dome from twisting, sliding or lifting away from its foundation during weather changes. There are usually some flanges at the bottom of the wall of the dome. These flanges have few inches wide mounting which can be turned from inside. The flange will have to be drilled down the foundation and then fasten securely to the dome with the anchor bolts holding the bolts to the position.
During installation of observatory dome, pre-assembly will lessen the time that will be taken to deploy up to sixty percent. With pre-assembly, there are dome building experts whose jobs are just to build and test the observatories. These experts will have completed building the dome at the manufacturer’s workshop or plant. After completion, the dome will be taken through some observatory tests to ascertain its efficiency. The moment it passes these tests, the dome will be partially unpacked to make it faster to assemble again. And once it is ready to be shipped to the customer’s location, this partially observatory dome is shipped like that making the installation at the customer location very faster.
So for some customers who have to pay for the time to take to install their observatory domes at their location, they should try and consider pre-assembly to reduce the money to pay for the installation.
