Eagan and Rosemount Orthodontics Specialist Tells How to Combat Tooth Sensitivity
AGAN, MINNESOTA- When teeth are sensitive to everything that is hot or cold, that doesn\’t make for pleasant dining experiences.
Tooth sensitivity is a common issue; a condition that strikes one in every five adults. Luckily for sufferers, there are several actions that when taken, will help lessen the discomfort, said Dr. Jennifer Eisenhuth, who treats patients from Rosemount and other neighboring towns at her Eagan orthodontics practice.
What Causes Tooth Sensitivity?
The children and adult orthodontics provider sometimes has patients complain of sensitivity after getting their braces, she said. Understanding that there is a difference between sensitivity and soreness is important.
\”The sensitivity that accompanies orthodontic treatment in its early stages and immediately following periodic adjustments is short-lived and fades as your teeth grow accustomed to having appliances on them,\” she said.
The persistent sensitivity that is the result of eating sugary foods and hot or cold food and drinks is what many patients want to alleviate. The American Dental Association lists the following as the common causes of sensitivity:
– Cavities
– Chipped, cracked or broken teeth
– Worn tooth enamel
Brushing teeth too forcefully, eating foods with high acid content, and the aging process all contribute to the wearing a way of enamel, Eisenhuth said.
But how does that bring on tooth sensitivity? Healthy teeth have porous tissue known as dentin that is protected by the tooth enamel and the gum tissue. Dentin can become exposed if gum tissue recession occurs or teeth enamel erodes. Microscopic holes in the dentin- known as tubules- connect to the nerve and trigger pain when they become irritated by some foods and beverages.
\”Because this is such a common problem, many makers of oral hygiene products have created products designed specifically to alleviate sensitivity,\” she said. Desensitizing toothpastes and rinses, soft-bristled tooth brushes, and even dental floss designed for those with sensitive gums are available in drug stores.
\”If you feel as though over-the-counter products fail to alleviate the sensitivity, talk to your dentist to see if there is a professional-grade product available,\” Eisenhuth said.
