Eating to Maximize Workouts

Eating right is one of the most important things that you can do to make your exercise programs as effective as possible. It doesn’t matter what kind of exercise you are doing; eating right will play a large part in the efficiency of your exercise program. Eating according to your exercise program is important, as you need to consume food according to the energy you need for the specific program. Here are some great tips for eating to maximize your workouts:

1. Get a healthy start on your day by eating a hearty breakfast. Having a healthy breakfast ensures that you have the energy you need for the first few hours of your day, which is the time when you are the most productive. You will also help to raise the levels of blood sugar in your body. Try and eat complex carbohydrates as much as possible, and eat a light breakfast if you are going to do exercise soon after you finish eating. Low fat milk, cereal, juice, and bananas are all excellent breakfast foods. Coffee is fine to drink the morning, but make sure to drink it an hour or so before your exercise.

2. The size of your meals actually does matter. Large meals should be eaten no less than three hours before you exercise, that that will give your body time to digest the food you’ve eaten. Medium sized meals should be eaten no less than two hours before you exercise, and a small snack can be eaten an hour or more before you exercise. Giving time for your food to digest will ensure that your body has the energy it needs without the risk of cramping or your stomach becoming upset.

3. Snacking right before you do your workout is a great way to have enough energy to complete a rigorous exercise routine, and you may find that having a light snack afterwards will help you to replenish the fluids and minerals lost during your exercise. You will find that eating before your exercise won’t actually give you a boost in energy, but it can help to reduce the hunger pangs that would distract you from focusing on your workout. It can also help to raise your blood sugar, and will be a good choice if it has been a few hours since you have last eaten. Try drinking an energy drink, eating an energy bar, whipping up a fruit smoothie, or have some bananas or fresh fruits. Granola bars are another great snack before a workout, as are crackers or whole wheat bagels with peanut butter. A cup of yoghurt will also be a good snack.

Following these tips can help you make your exercise program more effective, and you will find that eating the right foods will be a huge help in making it easier for you to do exercise. The tips laid out above can help you maximize your exercise program, and thus help you to get the best benefits from the effort you expend working out.
