Email and Information Technology Service

Email is one of the most common activities in households with internet access. The developments of email and mobile text messages have entirely transformed the way friends interact with one another.

A major problem with email is receiving unsolicited messages or junk advertising, and in massive quantities, – a fact of life known as spam. Another problem is what is known as phishing, which involves sending fraudulent emails in order to fool the recipients into revealing their financial information.

Search Engines as an Information Technology Service

Web searches for information are one of the star services of the Information Society, provided by so-called search engines, like Google or Yahoo, which are tools to extract from text documents the words that best represent them. These words are stored in an index, and the query is performed on the index. One can thus find all sorts of resources (websites, forums, images, videos, etc.) associated with various combinations of words. The search result is a list of web addresses that may contain detailed information about topics related to the keywords searched. The information may include web pages, images, or other file types. Some search engines also do data mining, and may have results available in databases or open directories. Search engines can either operate algorhythmiclly, or be a mixture of algorhythmic and human input. Some websites offer a search engine as their main feature; Daily Motion, YouTube and Google Video etc. are examples of video search engines.

Online Banking as an Information Technology Service

The banking sector has undergone a vigorous revolution in recent years thanks to the development of Information Technology, and its strength is buttressed insofar as it has made use of these services. The success is due largely to product variety and to the ease and convenience of management that the services can provide. Bank customers have been using them increasingly for making transfers or for checking their balances, for example.

Security issues include phishing, already mentioned; pharming, which is manipulation of the internet address system, such as email harvesting and list selling; the deception of fake access websites, and other income transfer scams.

Music and Audio as Information Technology Services

Ever since the popularity of MP3 players, sales of downloaded music over the internet have been displacing the CD format.

A new service related to audio content is the podcast, a term that comes from the contraction of the words “iPod” and “broadcast”. These are audio files containing news, music, radio etc., recorded by fans or media. It is usually recorded in MP3; although it can be heard on one’s computer, it is the normal function of the portable MP3 players like iPod, which had sold 160 million units worldwide by September 2008.

In some countries, political speeches have been distributed via podcast, ensuring that the message is direct, and bypassing editing by the media.

Many radio stations have been launched featuring “podcasting”, which allows users to cutomize and listen to their favorite programs, reaching an audience with programming that cannot always be heard on the radio.
