Exercising and the Master Cleanse Lemonade Diet

Many individuals who are on the master cleanse lemonade diet have posted this question on different blogs and websites. The question is \”can you exercise while on the master cleanse,\” also known as the \”lemonade diet\”?

There are of course opposing views and various opinions, and my opinion, based on my personal experience and also anecdotal comments from friends who have exercised and cleansed, is that one can safely exercise while on the master cleanse.

But first, let’s give some background on the master cleanse lemonade diet.

The master cleanse was developed by a naturopath named Stanley Burroughs, who in the 1940’s published a book entitled “The Master Cleanser.” Mr. Burroughs proposed a 10 to 40 day, liquid only fasting cleanse to promote general health and wellness and to eliminate built-up toxins from the colon and intestines. The master cleanse has remained popular until now because of the simplicity and the effectiveness.

The liquid you drink during the cleanse is made with lemon juice, maple syrup, and cayenne pepper. This spicy lemonade serves as the cleansing agent to loosen the built-up waste and toxins. A daily salt water flush and laxative tea further help with the elimination process. Mental focus, commitment, and planning are important factors for a successful cleanse.

Everyone reacts differently to the cleanse. Factors such as your weight, overall health and lifestyle, and physical and mental condition all affect one’s reaction to the cleanse. The first few days of the cleanse are the most challenging as you adjust to a diet of lemonade only.

For most people, regular exercise during the master cleanse is not a problem. Although you are not consuming solid food during the cleanse, the lemonade provides the nutrients and calories your body needs. The master cleanse is not just a reducing cleanse or a diet. It also serves to help you rebuild by providing necessary nutrients.

Contrary to some misconceptions that you will ‘starve’ and become weak if you don’t eat solid food for more than a couple of days, cleansing on the master cleanse is likely to improve your energy level drastically. People who were feeling lethargic before the master cleanse often report feeling a huge increase in energy level.

Because your system is given the opportunity to rest and eliminate waste that has been weighing you down, most people feel a surge of energy during the cleanse, which allow them to exercise without any problems.

Unlike a water cleanse, the lemonade cleanse usually will not cause you to feel weak and faint. Some people, however, are only comfortable with light exercise and not heavy weight lifting and muscle building because they are concerned about muscle break down without protein consumption.

Regardless of your level of exertion, some exercise is ideal because it further promotes detoxification through the master cleanse. So, “can you exercise while on the master cleanse?” Yes, but the usual caveat applies: consult a doctor first to ensure your health and safety.
