Exercising Successfully With At-Home Treadmills
Often, a piece of exercise equipment is purchased, used a few times, and then forgotten. It becomes a clothes rack, or a cup holder for people sitting on the couch next to it. In fact, studies show that a large percentage of treadmills and other home exercise equipment are used regularly for less than a month. However, it doesn\’t have to be this way.
Create an exercise schedule. If you don\’t set the time out of your schedule, it\’s easy to be \’too busy\’ at all times. Plan ahead of time so that you don\’t have this excuse when you\’re looking at your treadmill and not really wanting to exercise. Scheduling your workout time makes it easier to create a habit, and just fall into working out a regular basis.
Position your exercise machine in front of the television. If you regularly watch TV, this is a great way to make sure you get some exercise. If you like alone, consider removing anything else from in front of the television, so that you have to at least walk on the treadmill in order to watch anything. Of course, this will have to be compromised for family members in multi-person households.
Make a good playlist for the your mp3 player. Consider books on tape if you don\’t like music while you work out. Actual books work well for people walking on a treadmill, too, although this isn\’t a possibility for joggers. Libraries can be good sources for free books on tape and music, so that your new exercise habit doesn\’t become too expensive.
Consider implementing a rewards system for yourself. Buy a new piece of clothing, new CD, or other desired object only after you have reached a certain number of hours or days of exercising. Just the habit of keeping track of your exercise can also help you stay with it, since you will notice immediately if you are slacking off or skipping days.
Tell everyone you know about your new plan to get in shape. That way, you will feel a little pressure to actually work out regularly, so that when people ask how it\’s going you can tell the truth. Peer pressure may be a dangerous thing in some cases, but you can make it work for you, too.
Set a goal, such as participating in a 5K walk or run in six months. Register as far ahead of time as possible, and get someone you know to register too. This way, you will have something to work towards, and you will have someone counting on you to be ready. It\’s even better if the walk is a benefit for something, so you can feel good about participating and helping raise money.
Most of all, be aware that most treadmills end up as decorative pieces, and that yours is at risk of becoming avant-garde art as well if you aren\’t careful. Making schedules, tracking your times and giving yourself rewards for using it won\’t work if you aren\’t aware that you aren\’t using it. So try to sit back and take stock of your exercise routine every few weeks, to avoid trailing off and then stopping altogether.
